President Crespo Has Taken His Pen In
Hand to Write a Letter or thank.

Patriotism in Caracas.
CARACAS, Venezuela, Dec. 20.—Wlth
the message to President Crespo announc-
ing President Cleveland’s determination
to defend Venezuela, the government here
finally and decisively declares today that
it will refuse to pay the $60, 000 indemnity
recently demanded by Great Britain. '
Bulletins at the foreign oflioe report the
coming of British warships. The United
States naval squadron is watched for and
the feeling here is intense. ,
On all sides are heard words of joy over
the message of President Cleveland and
the subsequent dispatches reporting the
prompt action of the house of representa-
tives in voting to appropriate $100,000 for
a commission to investigate the Venezu-
elan boundary line. The government do-
clares that it will put 150,000 soldiers in
the field if necessary, to sustain its sover-
eignty in opposition to British attacks.
When the message of President Cleve-
land was shown to President Crespo, he
expressed his appreciation, and is now
writing a personal letter of thanks to the
executive of the United States. He says
that the attitude of Venezuela will always
be one of self protection, and that the re-
public will uphold rights that properly
may be regarded as hers at all hazards.
President Crespo today announces the
intention to call an extra session of the
Venezuelan congress. He will convene
that body .to communicate officially his
views as to the country’s course in the
light of the friendly attitude shown by
the United States.
The Venezuelan press calls upon the
people to show their patriotism on this
great occasion and their gratitude toward
the noble republic of the north, which has
proved in the supreme crisis its stanch ad-
herence to the principles laid down by its
most advanced statesmen in the early
years of its history.
To Get Ready For War.
The press also urges upon the people
the duty of preparing at once for war with
all their energy.
Special editions were issued by the news-
papers in the evening, reiterating the ex-
pression of the popular feeling of gratitude
that there was at last to be a union of pa
litical sentiment between North an . outh
America productive of beneflcent results.
They also declare their confidence in
the outcome of the commission which_

United States, they add, is new unique in
the political world.
Englishmen resident in Caracas betray
their uneasiness, but express the hope
that there will be a peaceful solution of
the diifieulty.
Today Caracas is crazy with patriotic
enthusiasm. The populace show that they
are deepiy moved to gratitude toward their

A grand mass meeting was held in the;
public plaza, at which ringing speeches
were made. The American minister was

which now absorbs the thoughts of Vene-
zuelans will be held on Jan. 1 at the
Union club. =
The minister of foreign afiairs called
formally at the American legation today
and expressed ,to Minister Haselton the
thanks of President Crespo.

mine explosion at Egypt, N. 0., today. 40
men ware either killed or imprisoned in a
