and college, and early developed a strong
taste for a literary life. When 17, he ,
wrote a number of poems, subsequently ;
published in a volume entitled,

Spain and Africa with his father, he pub-

“Le Dame aux Camellas, ” which gave
him instant -amc, and has had an ex-
traordinary success among all works of .

civilized languages, and, in its dramatic

Ill s 'Work as a Playwright.
It was in 1852 that Dumas fils first began
his writing for the stage, With an adapta-
tion of his great success, “Camille,” and
in the next 17 years more than 50 plays l
and curtain raisers by him were produced
in the Paris theaters. Returning to Paris
from the country, after the Commune, in .
1872, a series of his plays were produced
at the Gymnase. The success of his dramas
is closely associated with the fame of great
actresses, such as Bernhardt, Annie Des—
clee and Clara Morris.
M. Dumas’ fine collection of pictures
was sold in 1892 for more than 500,000
francs. .
M. Dumas was installed a member of
the French Academy on Feb. 11, 1875,
and was promoted to the rank of com-
mander of the Legion of Honor.
His drama “Joseph Balsamo,” based
on his father’ s romance, “Cagliostro,”
was performed for the first time at the
Odeon, March 18,1878. He published in
1880 “Les Femmes Qui Tuont et les
Femmes Qul Votent,” in 1881 “La. Prin-
cesse do Bagdad," in 1885 “Denise, ” and

THE SEMINARY QUESTION.
Dr. Sprecher Says That It May split the
Presbyterian Church.
CLEVELAND, Nov. Sal—Tho action of
Allegheny seminary in acceding to the re—
quest of the Presbyterian general assem-
bly that all seminaries of the church shall
so change their charters that these insti-
tutions will be entirely under the author-
ity of the assembly has caused a stir
among the Cleveland Presbyterians, many
of whom belong to the liberal party.
Rev. Dr. S. P. Sprecher of the Euclid Av—
enue Presbyterian church, one of t most
extreme and brilliant liberals n the
church, said:
“The liberals hoped for better than
this, but are not greatly disappointed, for
Allegheny is one of the most conservative
of the seminaries. I don’t believe the ma-
jority of the seminarles will accede to the
assembly’ 3 demand. This question is
more likely to split the church than was
the Briggs case. The act of the general
assembly was one of as extreme tyranny
as can well be imagined.”
I Bail For Alleged Forger Moore.
BATAVIA, N. Y., Nov. 25.—William
next month. There are seven indictments
against him, covering seven notes aggre-
gating 82, 102. All the notes were made in
1891 and sold to Henry Locke of Leroy,
who died in April of that year. When an
effort was made by Locke’s widow to col-
lect the enotes, the alleged makers pro.

To Retire the Greenbacks.
At the rate the gold reserve has been
falling of late another bond issue will
have to be made. Congress will not be in
a position to pass any revenue legislation
before the holidays, and under the pres-
ent conditions it is regarded as very
doubtful if any legislation of that nature
can get through the senate. The silver
Democratic senators, who make up three«
fourths the Democratic side in the. senate,
are strongly opposed to Mr. Cleveland’s
financial ideas, and they blame him for

publicans will work with the silver Dem-
ocrats and the Populists on all financial
questions, and those three elements com-
bined may control the senate.
. It is well known that Mr. Cleveland is
elaborating a scheme to retire the green-
backs. But there is no possibility of any
bill of that kind going through congress
at this coming session. As for issuing in-
terest bearing obligations of any kind to
retire the greenbacks, it is doubtful if 50
votes could be had in congress in favor of
it. If the greenbacks are to be retired to
make way for national bank notes, no
matter whether or not interest bearing ob-
ligations have to be issued. such a bill
could hardly pass the senate. That seems
to be the general view here, and it is not
probable that any time whatever will be
wasted in consideration of any proposition
to retire the greenbacks.
