NEW YORK, Nov. 14.—”My sister’s spirit appeared to me and ordered me to kill Mann.” This startling statement was made by David T. Hannigan to Dr. Landon Carter in the Tombs. Dr. Gray so testified when the tragic murder trial Was resumed today. Further, Dr. Gray gave it as his solemn belief, based upon scientific research, that Hannigan was insane when he killed Mann. There was no diminution of interest in the trial of David F. Hannigan for killing Solomon H. Mann observable about the court of oyer and terminer when Justice Ingraham took his seat on the bench. The terrible strain which Hannigan un- derwent while his sisters, father and mother, wife and friends were testifying in his behalf has been lifted with the in- defense. The two sisters and the white haired little wife of the defendant, all in the deepest mourning, sat in a row behind him, as they have every day since the trial began. Dr. Landon Carter Gray of 60 East For- ty-ninth street, an alienist of note, who was called as a witness late yesterday aft- ernoon, was recalled to the stand by Dr. O’Sullivan for the defense. Dr. Gray said he had examined Hanni- gan in the Tombs and had learned from him that the memory of the shooting of. Mann was almost a blank, and that often in the defendant’s previous life had he had day dreams. He had always had dif- ficulty in sleeping. It was on Sept. 17 that Dr. Gray exam- ined Hannigan, and at that time Hanni- gan was insane in the opinion of the wit- ness. Hannigan was suffering from melan- cholia, he said. Saw His Sister’s Spirit. “In melancholia would the condition of the patient be noticeable to his lay friends?” asked Dr. O’Sullivan. “Yes,” answered Dr. Gray. “He would be brooding and des'pondent in most cases, and this would certainly be noticeable. ” . The witness, at the suggestion of Dr. O’Sullivan, went into a dissertation upon the various forms of insanity. “Hannigan told me,” said Dr. Gray, “that the spirit of his sister appeared to him“ before the killing of arm and urged him to the deed, and th 1:, after its ac« compllshment, her spirit appeared again and commended him for what he had done.” _ As Dr. Gray gave this testimony the and bowed his head. . When he looked up again, his eyes were red and tears stood in them. Dr. O'Sullivan continued to question Dr. Gray upon the hallucinations and de- lusions of lunatics, and the expert replied at great length. He said, among other things, that an alienist could now place his finger as ac- curately upon the portion of the brain governing some of the motives and actions ofa man as a musician could place his :finger upon the keys of a piano. The study of anatomy of the brain, he said, is making rapid strides, and he thought that in a few years the alienists could trace to its source in the brain the every movement or emotion of a man. The Four New Treaty Ports. WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 4.—-Consul General Jernigan, at Shanghai, has made a spe- cial report to the state department upon the four new treaty ports which have been opened by China to the world’s trade— namely, Chung King, in Szechuen; Hang- chow, in Chehkiang; Fuchau, in Kiangsu, and Sha-Tsze, or Shai. He shows that these are all great cities, located in wealthy sections and generally accessible by water. A Cuban Paper’s Wail. HAVANA, Nov. 14.—The Diario uDella Marina, the leading reformist organ of Cuba. publishes an editorial today in which it makes a strong attack upon Senor Canovas‘ del Castillo, the Spanish premier, directly insinuating that Cap- tain General Martinez do Campos is back- ing his policy.
