Mrs. Andrew J. Thompson had a
narrow eshape while driving under the
temporary bridge over Washington
street this morning. She had just
turned the horse under the structure
when a train dashed overhead and
frightened her horse causing him to
run out from under the bridge and
make a sharp turn in front of the Ma- ;
hackemo throwing Mrs. Thompson out =
into the street. She struck the ground
side of the face she was apparently un
injured, and a carriage was procured
and she removed to her home on
street. The horse ran away but was
Thomas Cavanagh, but not befhre the
carriage had been wrecked.
In the Superior court, civil side, yes-
terday. young George Cockefur was
sent to state prison for two years for
stealing S. E. Osborn’s horse. His
confederate, young Winegartner, was
sent to the reform school for the bal-
ance of his minority.

Parish Meeting.

The Wilton Burglars.
Walter Sergeant and James Gordon,
the .men charged with burglarizing
James Hunt’s store in South Wilton,
were each sentenced to the penitentiary
for one year in the Superior court yes-
terday.
MRS. FBEMING’S CASE.
The Accused Woman Is Nervous, but Con.
fident of Final Exoneration.
NEW YORK, Sept. 12,—The surprising
developments of the inquest into the
mysterious death of Mrs. Evelyn Bliss of
39.7 St. Nicholas avenue were still dis-
cussed at the new criminal court house to-
day. Mr. Brooke had‘stormed long and
eloquently against the proceedings where-
by Mrs. Fleming, who is charged with
poisoning her mother, was kept waiting
in the. coroner’s ofiice until a warrant
bond or an affidavit of the assistant dis-
trict attorney could be secured from J udgc
Fitzgerald. He had even declared that he
would take action legally to prevent the
case from going before the grand jury.
Assistant District Attorney Miller said
that the district attorney’s ofii’ce had re-
ceived no such order of prohibition. Ho
said that he couchnot tell whether or not
the case would be continued. before the
grand jury, because the law wa's very
strict on the point of prohibiting the giv-
ing out- of'any statement 'about the grand
jury’s acgon or programme. In support
of the view that the case Would be con-
tinued before the grand jury today was
the appearance of a little girl in charge
of Agent Stocking of the Gerry society,
who'was believed to be Grace Fleming,
the 10—year-old daughter of the prisoner.
The child was taken into Mr. Miller’s
noom and later spirited away again, no
one could tell where.
The long and exciting episodes and the
arguments of counsel before Coroner
O’Meagher co‘mpletely tired out Mrs.
Fleming. When she returned to the city
prison, she sank down on her bed com-
pletely exhausted. She did not compl'hin
mid had a fitful sleep during the night,-
and this’morning partook of a light break-
fast
The only way in which she would refer

whether I am guilty or not. He will make
it come out all right in the end.”
At the hearing before Judge Fitzgerald
on the warrant issued yesterday the gen—
eral opinion was that the action of the
grand jury on the mysterious box would
supersede the hearing, which was only ar-
ranged by the astute district attorney to
gain time.
Mr. McIntyre disappeared early from
the district attorney’s office. No one
seemed to know where he had gone.
Liberty Bell as a Globe Trotter.
CHICAGO, Sept. 12.—'1‘he Columbian
Liberty ball will start on its trip around
the world on Friday morning at 8 o’clock.
It will first go to the Atlanta exposition
to remain two months. Then it will be
taken to N cw Orleans and the City of
Mexico, and from there to Runnymede,
England, where the bell will ring in com-
memoration of Magna Charta. The rest of
the journey has not yet been planned.
Irving’s Company Arrives.
NEW YORK, Sept. 12.—The steamer
Southwark arrived from twerp today,
making her first trip as one 1 the Ameri-
tan line fleet. The Southwark brought
over 85 members of Sir Henry Irving’s
theatrical company, which will make its
flrst'appearance in Montreal next Monday
