Maximum Penalty For the Negro Who , The Ex-Seeretary’s Daughter \Vlll Become Killed the Princeton Student. TRENTON, July 25.—-John‘ S. Collins, the negro who shot and killed Frederick Ohl, a student at Princeton, last J une, and who was a few days ago convicted of murder in the second degree, today re ceived a sentence of 20 years athard labor in the state prison. Before the sentencé he was required to plead to the indictment for atrocious assault upon Garrett Coch- ran, another student, whom he shot at the same time, and his counsel entered a plea of non vult contendere. Upon this plea Collins was sentenced to ten years more, but Justice Gummere announced that he and his associates had decided to allow the sentences to run concurrently, thus mak- ing the term only 20 years altogether. N o plea for lenity was made by Collins’ counsel. The negro received his sentence stolidly and was unmoved even when Justice Gummere said that a verdict of murder in the first degree would have been proper. Farmers Round Up Tramps. NEWPORT, R. 1., July 25.—The sherifl of this céuuty, with a posse of farmers, armed with pitchforks and like weapons, returned from Portsmouth today with 12 tramps, whom they had captured in the woods. The county swarms with tramps just now, and the neighborhood has been terrorized by them. They have held up women and children and committed many petty depredat‘ions. NEWPORT, R. 1., July 25.——The latest social tonic of conversation here is the re‘ ported engagement of Miss Pauline Whit- ney, daughter of err-Secretary Whitney, and Mr. Almeric H. Puget of St. Paul. Mr. Puget is a member of the English famin of that name and a brother of Colo- nel Arthur Puget. ' NEW YORK, July 24.—Ex-Secretary Whitney is out of town, but Colonel G. B. M. Harvey, his personal representative in this city, when seen by a reporter this afternoon at 32 Liberty street, said that, although the publication was somewhat premature, the report was correct. Almeric H. Paget is a younger son of the famous English family of Pagets. He came to the United States when 16 years old and has made a fortune in the west. He is now manager for a large English real estate company, with headquarters at St. Paul. He is said by those who know him to be a thoroughgoing American business man, with plenty of western en- . ergy. He is about 30 years old. Miss Whitney is about 20. Miss Pauline Whitney is a tall, hand some girl, with a winsome disposition and a gentle temperament. At 14 she was at Dobbs Ferry, on the Hudson, and was described as a close student, very apt in her studies. ,Her father was then secretary of the navy, but Pauline was allowad to visit Washington only during the Christmas and Easter holidays, and indeed was kept out of the whirl and excitement of that fashionable society of which she was to become an ornament, down to the very moment of her formal introduction to it under the guidance of her mother, its ac- knowledged leader in the winter of 1892-3. She was an immediate favorite as a bud, but the death of her mother in February, 1893, was followed by her complete retire- ment. Then she became very ill herself, the climax of her severe mourning over her mother’s death. She was taken to Europe for her health, and during her absence abroad a. rumor gained currency that she was engaged to George Vanderbilt. .
