Notice is hereby given to all persons liable
to pay taxes to the City of Norwalk, in the
County of Fairfield and State of Connecticut.
that the undersigned, Collector of Taxes for
said City, on the list of 1395, has received a
warrant from the Mayor for the collection of
the tax laid by said City, March 4th. 1895. on
the ratable estate liable to taxation therein.
That said tax is payable July 15th and that he
will be present at the Council Room in the
Fairfield County National Bank Building,
every week day evening after July 15th, from
:30 to 9 o’clock until August- 15th, 1895. Taxes
can also be paid each day to F. S. Barre, at the
Holmes. Keeler & Selleck Co.
Also, that upon all of said taxes remaining
unpaid after the 15th day of August, 1895 in-
terest at the rate of nine (9) per cent. per an-
num will be charged from the 15th day of

An unknown man was found lying
between the railroad tracks at Newton
Tuesday, in a badly injured condition.
He had probably been there during the
greater part of the night, and was eVl-
dently a tramp who was stealing a ride
and had fallen from a' passing freight

Indications That The English Election “'lll
Give Salisbury a. Big Majority.
LONDON, July 15.—The elections so far
have resulted in surprising Unionist gains,
and Lord Salisbury will undoubtedly have
a strong majority in the house of com-
mons, so strong, in fact, that he will be
able, if he chooses, to revise the cabinet on
a Tory basis and reduce the representation
of his Liberal- Unionist allies.
The result of the voting in 21 contested
districts, represented by 24 members of
parliament, is a net gain of seven seats by
the Salisbury coalition government.
More interesting and more important
than more figures is the fact that Sir Wil-
liam Harcourt, the liberal leader in the
house, whom most members of his party
wish to see succeed Lord Rosebery as lead-
er of the whole party, has been badly beat-
en in what has been regarded as the per-
fect—ly safe Liberal constituency of Derby.
The veteran political gladiator must, for
the second time in his life, submit to the
humiliation of' seeking another constitu-
‘ ency to send him to the house of commons
or must retire from political life. .
The Unionists made heavy gains in ev-
ery district where polling took place. The
Liberals made an apparent gain of the seat
at Perth, but it was only apparent. The
district has been represented by a Conser-
vative because a Liberal split at the last
election enabled the Tory candidate to slip
in. The Conservative vote today was larger
and the Liberal vote smaller than in the
same district in 189:2.
The total polling was highly significant.
The districts voting were all city constitu-
encies, but did not include London. The
total vote in 19 districts was: Unionists,
93,186; Liberals, 87,034; Unionist major-
ity, 6, 152. In the same districts in the
last general election the Unionists polled
83,339‘ votes and the Liberals 91,528, a
Liberal majority of 8,189.
The figures therefore show a net Union-
ist gain of 14,341 in a total :poll of 180,-
000. The city of Manchester, holding six
seats, voted Unionist, 27.122; Liberal, 23,?
603, a not Unionist 'gain of 2,196.

The river and harbor report of Col.

Secretary Hayes Tells the \Vlndow Glass

PIKTSBURG, July 15.-—The National
Window Glass workers will not leave the
K. of L., though it is well known that
such Was the intention. - Yesterday Secre-
tary Treasurer John W. Hayes appeared
before the convention to explain why L.
A. 300 should not leave the old organiza-
tion. When hoggob up to speak, he was
hissed, but the delegates Were all with
him when he finished.
When hissed, he dared the organization
to leave the K. of L., and expounded a
few sections of the order, one of which
stated that if a local sccedecl, any ten mem‘
bers of the body could reorganize and take
all the funds and property belonging to
the seceding board. Hayes followed this
up by givin the names of ten men. who
would take his action in case the organi-
zation was to leave the K. of L. .
The fight was made on the proposed se-
cession of L. A. 300, the richest labor or-
ganization in the country. It holds bonds,
mortgages and cash to the amount of
$500,000 and has a membership of 7,000,
including all branches of the glass trade.
The general sentiment of the convention
was,that secession was out of the question,
although no formal vote has been taken.

CHATTANOOQA. July 15.-—-Many of the
most distinguished citizens of the United
States are coming to Chattanooga to at-
tend the Chickamauga park dedication.
Many of these will stay on Lookout moun-
tain, and rooms are now being rapidly as-
signed to them. '
Governor Hastings of Pennsylvania has
engaged rooms for himself and stall at
Lookout inn. They will be here from the
18th to the 2151:. Secretary of War Lamont,
who has sole charge of the dedication, has
reserved rooms for himself, members of
the cabinet and other prominent govern-
ment officials.
The congressional party has taken 40
rooms, and apartments have also been en-
gaged for General Daniel E. Sickles and
the Gettysburg and Chickamauga move-~
ment commission and Governor Green-
halgc of Massachusetts and party.
