CONCERNING THE TAKING OF FISH IN THE
'WA’I‘EBS OF LONG ISLAND SOUND.
Section 1.

Commercing on the line between the
towns of Norwalk and Darien, at the
mouth of Five Mile River Harbor, from
thence south along said town has to a
point due west from the most southerly
point on Shelfield Island, from thence
easterly along the south side of Sheffield
Island and the plains to the easterly
point of the plains. from thence easter-
[y to the most southerly point on Coop
Island. from thence easterly to a line
between the towns of Westport and
Norwalk, from thence north aloner the
line at Sprite Island buseen the towns
of Westport and Normtlk to the main-
land at Duck Pond.
Sec. 2. Whenever there shall be
any doubt as to WDlClJ of the adjoining’
towns has jurisdiction of the place
where an arms against this act has
been committed, such offense [11:13! be
prosecuted in either of Suld towns.

States cruiser Columbia was towed intc
drydock to have her bottom scraped and
painted. While at anchor in the harbor a
large number of visitors have boarded her,
and she has been greatly admired.

MILWAUKEE, July 9.-—-Thc failure oi
the telegraph wires between Milwaukee
and Chicago had the effect of developing
quickly a method of transmitting prose
matter by wire that is new in the west
Typewriter operators, with telephone rc-
ceivers at their cars, were seated in the
newspaper offices at Milwaukee, and the
news was talked to them from Chicago at
the rate of 80 words a minute.

by a wreck on 71.33 Paulina street electric
car line. The Sr was running at a high
rate of speed. when near Taylor street it
jumped the truck and dashed into the

Mrs. Johnson Guilty.
GALESB'CRG, Ills, July 9.—Thc jury in
the case of state versus Mrs. Ida Johnson,
charged with murdering her husband, ex-
Alderman Charles F. Johnson, brought
in a verdict finding the defendant guilty
of manslaughter and fixing the sentence
at ten years in the penitentiary.

Murphy Defeated by Craty.
SYRACUSE, July 9.-—Jimmie Murphy
was knocked out by Mike Craty in the
twenty-third round of a prize fight that
was pulled off at a resort on Onondaga

Smith a sitting for he: strait. Her maj-

LONG ISLAND CITY, N. Y., July 6.-
Thomas Erwin, 28 years of age, of 25 Pike
street, Nrw York, was a prisoner before
Police J 1:»;tice Duffy in the police court
here today charged with grand larceny.
The complainant was Peter E. Barrett,
a plumber of 247 East Forty-fifth street,
New York. Barrett had been to Rock-
away Beach yesterday and returned on the
train leaving the beach, at 9:20 o’clock.
While the train was half way between
Long Island City and the beach Barrett
says Erwin attacked him and grabbed his
watch. He struggled with Erwin and al-
leges that Henry Campbell and Edward
Barry, two friends of Erwin, attacked him.
The two, he says, held him while Erwin
took his watch. A policemen in the em-
ploy of the railroad passing through the
car heard the struggle. He Went to the as-
sistanceof Barrett, and Erwin allowed the
Watch to fall to the floor. The train was
going at a. lively rate, and the three men
could not get away.
The policemen took them into custody.
and when the train arrived in this city a
little later the men Were locked up.
Erwin was held in $1,000 bail for an ex-
amination a week from today. As soon as
he was arrested be notified his friends in
New York to appear in court today, but
none showed up to go bail for him. He
said that ex-Assemblyman Callahan would
appear to go on his bond. '
Campbell and Barry Were then arraign-
ed. They both denied taking part in the
robbery. ,
Police Justice Dufi'y was not satisfied
with the explanation made by Campbell
and held him in $500 bail for an examina-
tion next Friday. The explanation of
Barry appeared satisfactory to the police
justice, but he held him in $100 bail as a
witness to appear next week when the
cases come up.
CAPTAIN WEBB KILLED.
His Submarine Boat Jumped From the
Water and Jammed Him to Death.
COEUR D’ALENE, Ida, July 6.-—-Captain
Paul Webb lost his life near here in an at!
tempt to ride his submarine boat or barrel
down a 300 foot log chute into Lake
Coeur d’Alene. About 500 people witness-
ed his , attempt to. descend into the lake,
which took place at Rosin’s log camp, about
eight miles from here. .
Webb was placed Within the boat, which
was 6% feet long, 2 feet in diameter and
cone shaped. Two-thirds of the way down
there was a slight rise in the incline. Here
the barrel jumped 30 feet into the air,
striking the ground on end, then rolling
40 feet farther down the hill. Persons
turned their heads away horror stricken,
and some ladies fainted.
When-the barrel was opened, Webb was
jammed closely into the end, but was con-
scious. Dr. Russell of Spokane examined
him and pronounced his spinal column
broken. He was taken to Spokane, where
he died at 11 o’clock last night. .
His nanie was James Stewart, and he'
was formerly a photographer at McMinn-
ville, Or. Captain Paul Webb was a flo-
titious name assumed for professional rea-
sons. He was a cousin of Senator Stewart.
