WINSTON, N. (3., July 1.-—A white
farmer named Sims was jailed at Charlotte
last night for a horrible crime.
While working in his cotton patch in
Mecklenburg county yesterday afternoon
he fatally shot a. boy who had thrown a
rock at him. Sims then shot his wife
twice, killing her instantly. The 11115-
band left his wife in the field, weltering
in her blood, and gave himself up to the
authorities.
He says he knew he would be hung for
shooting the boy a 51 could not bear the
idea of being separated from his wife.
Sims’ crime has created a sensation.

Balance of Many Enterprises For the
Quarter Ending June 80.
CBATTANOOGA, July 2.—-The Trades-
man, Chattanooga, has issued its quarter-
ly report of new industries established or
incorporated in the United States for the
quarter year ending June 30. The total
number reported is 666 as against 638 for
the second quarter of 1894, 65 for the
ame period in 1893 and 779 for 1892, show-
ing that the industrial development of the
south is being well maintained.
The great interest which the south is
manifesting in the building of cotton mills
is shown in the report by the fact that 101
new téxtile plants are nanniinmd as in
progress, whereas in the set gnu-tor of
1894 the whole number l‘~ was 32.
The number for the same i . -=t' 1893
was 72, and in 189:2 it was :33! List the sec-
ond quarter. Since Jan. 1 The Trades-
man has reported 207 of these mills. The
Tradesman says that not all these are ac-
tually under way at the present time, but
have been organized, are breaking ground,
and many are nearly ready to begin man-
ufacturing. This total of 101 mills in-
cludes 29 in North Carolina, 25 in South
Canollna, 19 in Alabama and 17 in Georgia.
The report also shows the organization
or establishment during the quarter of 43
flour and grist mills, 42 mining and quar-
rying companies and the same number of
electrical companies. Thirty-two cotton
d1 companies, 28 foundries and machine
shops, 28 water works companies and 26
compresses and gins was established dur-
ing the quarter, together with 25 canner-
ies, 8 brick and tile plants, 7 tanneries, 6
phosphate companies and 3 breweries.
The woodworking industry is credited
with 137 new plants, every southern state
being represented in the list, Georgia head-
ingwith 16, Arkansas and North Carolina
each having 15, Alabama and Texas 14
each and Florida, Louisiana and Tennes-
see each having 10. Miscellaneous or un-
classified new industries are 84 in number
and complete a total which, The Trades-
man says, is, in view of existing and past
conditions, eminently satisfactory.
