A. M., of this city who visited Union

Views of the Members on the Money and
Income Tax Questions.
NEW YORK, June 3.—The World pub-
lishes n telegraphic poll of the next con-
gress, as far as obtainable, upon the silver,
tariff and income tax questions. The
World sums up the result as follows:
”In a general way it may be said that
out of 116 members Who gave unequivocal
answers to the silver question 55 are un-
qualifiedly in favor of [free coinage; 44 fa-
vor binietallism generally,with the proviso
of an international agreement. Only 17
can fairly be classed as favoring a single
gold standard. and the attitude of some of
these oven is not definite. The south and
far western states are almost unanimous
for free coinage, the central states lean to-
ward silvor. with international bimetallic
qualifications. and it is only in New York,
New England and adjacent eastern states
that there are any avowedly gold standard
men. '
”In regard to the tariff, only 28 mem-
bers are against all change, while 35 favor
moderate changes, and 38 are pronounced
.. for radical changes. A few are free trad-
ers. The moderates are chiefly those who
think changes will be necessary in order
to increase revenues.
, “The income tax question brought out
many sharp and plquant answers. Forty‘
nine congressmen say that they favor the
principle of the tax. Forty-seven oppose
it. A great many evaded the question or
failed to answer it.
“A few details by states will be inter-
esting. Alabama, Arkansas, California,
Colorado, Florida. Idaho. Mississippi,
Montana. Nevada. North Carolina. South
Carolina. South Dakota, Virginia, Wash-
ington and Wyoming are solid for silver.

chiefly in Delaware. Georgia, Illinois, In-
diana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana. Michigan.
Minnesota. Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio.
Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
“New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania,
Rhode Island. Massachusetts and Vermont
have the gold advocates. Alabama, Ar-
kansas, Texas, the Carolinas. Georgia,
Louisiana and most of the other southern
states are solid for the income tax. New
York and the east generally oppose it.
Elsewhere the division is nearly even. "

BATTLE IN A COAL MINE.
Two Hundred Hung (Lucy‘Slavs Viciously
Attack Nonunion \Vorkmen.

35 miners who returned to work in the
Gaylord coal works above Martin’s Ferry,
0., had gone in, 200 Runs. Slave and
Poles from Dillonville, Laurelton and
other mining towns on the Wheeling and
Lake Erie appeared. having gathered the
night before and marched across the coun-
try headed byabrass band. One gang
went into the mine and beat those at
work, driving them out while about 130
men formed a gantlet outside as the flee-
ing miners fled and struck them with
clubs and crowbars and then threw the
workmen over-the bank. Half of them
were injured, nine seriously. Three are
still missing.
Seven of the assailants were captured by
deputy sheriffs and are now in jail at
Bridgeport. Others walked home. while
about .100 captured a C. and P. freight
train and made the crew carry them to
Portland. Sherlfl‘ Darby of Belmont coun-
ty has a force on guard. Work will be rc~
sumed by the miners not disabled. Mci
Glnley Brothers of Wheeling own the
mines. The men are working at 60 cents
until the scale is settled, when they agreed
to continue at that rate. The McGlnloys
will prosecute all file rloters who can be
identified. Names cannot be obtained. as
nearly all concerned are foreigners and
known only by numbers.
CARSON MINT SHORTAGE.
Only a Small Amount; of Silver Discovered
on Plcklcr’s Premises.
CARSON, Nev.. J une 6. —-A woman
named SteWart caused the arrest of J.
Pickler, with whom she had been living,
for striking her. Later she told the attor-
neys for John L. Jones, who is under ar-
rest for being responsible for the mint
shortage, that Pickler had a considerable
amount of bullion from the mint secreted
about his housegaud yard. Upon making
a search the officers discovered several
large pieces of rotor-ted amalgam weighing
10% pounds, principally of silver. When
confronted with this, Pickler said it be-
longed tohis brother in Idaho. who sent
it here to be coined six months ago, but
owing tothe trouble in the mint he did
not dare send it in. Plckler said it was
worth $300, but the officers think it worth
more. The search was continued.
The woman said that they would find
gold granulations, but if there were any
Plekler had disposed of them. She stated
that Plokler had been stealing bullion
from the mint for some time. Jones’ at-
torneys believe that this discovery will lead
to something tangible soon. Pickler was
in the smelting room under the Garnatt
administration several years ago, and un-
der Adams. the present superintendent.
but was not employed under Hooter.
