OLD PUT AS A DUELIST.
flis Two Remarkable Encounters on the
Field of Honor.
It is perhaps a fact not very generally
known that Gen. Israel Putnam, the Old
Put of Revolutionary fame, was the hero
of two “affairs of honor.” I
In those days Of frantic Puritanism the
custom of risking one’s life on the duel-
ing ground was regarded as little short
of sacrilegious and held as an offense
against both Church and State. HOW-
ever, notwithstanding all this, Old Put
was twice “called out.”
The first affair grew out Of a difficulty
with a brother Officer, who assumed a
belligeren attitude and demanded im~
mediate satisfaction. This Putnam at
first refused to give, on the ground that
the serv1ces of both belonged to the coun-
try and that it would be unpatriotic, not
to say tin-Christian, to risk the loss of
two lives except in conflict with thecom-
mon enemy.
However, as his antagonist refused tO
be pacified, he at last agreed to meet him
“according to usage,” without seconds,
at daylight, in a neighboring field. Put-
nam arrived first on the ground, armed
with an old gun loaded with slugs. A
few minutes later his opponent approach-
ed, carrying a small SWOi-d and two duel-
ing pistols.
When he was about thirty yards away
Old Put sighted him and let fly his choi— é
cest assortment of nails and scrap iron.
The Ofiicer naturally came to a halt and
shouted:
“What are you doing. sir? Is this the
proper conduct of a man of honor and an
American Officer.”
“W'hat am I about. Sir?” returned Put-
nam; “why, I’m defending my life against
a man who is trying to murder me. And
if you don’t get out in less time than it
takes old Heath to hang a Tory you are a.
gone dog!”
“But, sir, I——”
Bang! went Putnam’s musket again,
and away went his pugnacious antagon-
ist at 3. Nancy Hanks rate of speed, but
laughing in spite of all his anger and
mortification.
Putnam’s other affair was with an
English officer on parole who took Offense
at some brisquerie of his and challenged
him. A time and place was appointed.
but when the Englishman arrived he
found I’utnam seated on a powder key,
smoking a pipe with the utmost non-
chalence. He was motioned to a seat by
the Offending Putnam, who calmly re- ',
marked as he lit a fuse leading into the
bungholc of the keg that the chances of
them both being blown to perdition was
about equal. 4
This was too much for the Britisher,
who made a wild break for the door,
while Put cal-led derisively:
“You’re just as brave as I took you to :
be, but you needn’t hurry, for there's l
nothing in this keg but onions. I thought
I’d try you with onions first. but you
don’t like the smell, ha, ha, yOu don’t
like the smell!”
But the punctilious Englishman had ;
gentecly retired—Washington Post.

\Vestingliouse Meeting Adjourned.
PITTsnuno, May lit—The annual meet-
ing of the stockholders of the Westing-
house Electric and Manufacturing com-
pany was held here today. The annual
reports were not delivered and the meeting
adjourned to meet in East Pittsburg on
July 17.
Rochester Releases Pop Smith.
ROCHESTER, Eloy 16.—Pop Smith, the
veteran baseball player, who has captained
the local team this season, was released
today.

WASHINGTON, May 16.—The appeal of
Commissioner of Pensions Lochren from
the mandamus of the District supreme
'court forbidding him to reduce the pen-
sion rating of Judge C. D. Long of Mich-
igan came up in the United States court
of appeals today. Edward B. Whitney ap-
peared for the commissioner and T. J.
H‘bpkins for Judge Long.
A Significant Coal Move.
COLUMBUS, 0., May 16. — A special
from Massillon says trains of empty coal
cars from the Wheeling and Lake Erie
Massillon yards were sent to the Ohio
river today to be returned West with West
Virginia coal. Miners at Laurelton and
Dillonvale in Ohio near the river are stop-
ping trains suspected of carrying coal.
