LONDON, May 9.—-A dispatch to The Chronicle from Paris says that Count Boniface de Castellane and his wife. former- ly Miss Anna Gould of New York, have bought a large site at the corner of the Avenue du Bois do Boulogne and the Ave- nue de Malakoii‘, paying therefor 700 francs per meter. The Contess do Castellane will now carry out the dream of her life—that is, to exactly reproduce the Grand Trianon at Versailles, with immense gardens, for a Paris residence. The Grand Trianon is a handsome villa, one story in height, in the form of a horse- shoe. and is situated about three-quarters of a mile to the northwest of the terrace of the palace of Versailles. It was erected by Louis XIV, for Mme. de Maintcnon. The salon des glaces in the villa contains a tu- ble of which the top, made of a single piece of oak, is nine feet across. In the salon do famille is a table given by Charles IV of Spain to Napoleon I. The grand vestibule, in which the famous trial of Marshal Bazaine took place in 1873, contains a grouping in marble represent— ing France and Italy exchanging the kiss of peace. This group was presented to the Empress Eugenie by the ladies of Milan. The villa contains several richly furnished apartments and many curiosities. May 9.—-The Penrose res- olution providing for an investigation by a senate committee of five of the munici- pal afi‘airs of Philadelphia passed the sen- ate today with only one dissenting vote, that of Senator Osborn. The resolution was reported from the judiciary general committee by Senator Grady, with 3 rec- ommendation that it be adopted by the senate as committed. Watkins left a wife and Mrs. Hill a husband in Utica. A peculiar feature of the case is that the man and woman deserted in Utica are brother and sister. Strong Approves the Police Bill. ALBANY, May 9.—-Mayor Strong’s let- ter accompanying the bipartisan police bill, which he has returned to the senate, states that the bill is accepted by the city of New York, notwithstanding the serious objec- tions which have been urged against it. McLean Owns the Morning Journal. NEW YORK, May 9.—-The Morning Jour- nal newspaper, formerly owned by Albert Pulitzer, has been purchased by Johh R. McLean of the Cincinnati Enquirer, and will be conducted by him as a 2 cent daily. Mr. McLean has long been anxious to get a paper in the east. Mr. McLean has al- ready taken charge of the paper. No changes have Been made in the stafl’. The purchase price, it is said. was $600,000. McLean has not given any hint as to what his policy will be. May 9.—The case of , wife murderer George Andrews, now in the county jail here awaiting execution. resembles that of Dr. Buchanan. Andrews was tried, found guilty and sentenced. His case was appealed from court to cnurt until the United States su- preme court rendered a decision adverse to him. Since that time Andrews has been in jail waiting for some one to name a date on which he shall be executed. The delayed execution still seems far away. The reprieve last obtained was from Gow ernor Warts. The courts now refuse to re- sentence the man, and say the responsibil- ity rests with the governor. He was to be executed on a certain day between certain hours. He was not executed on that day because the governor stayed the execution, and it is now held by the courts that so far as they are concerned their connection with the case is ended. The supreme court justice has been asked to sentence An- drewa and refused. Prosecutor Stryker will now ask the governor to seta new date for the execution. .,___ ..... $100 Reward $100. CHICAGO, May 9.—Five of the largest coal mining companies in northern Illinois have combined in a fight for business against their competitors in other sections as a result of the refusal of the railroads to make a satisfactory adjustment of freight rates.
