WASHINGTON, April 17.—Mr. Charles H. Mansur, assistant comptroller of the treas- ury department and formerly a member of congress from Missouri, died today at the National hotel. His death had been ex« pooled for about a week. Mr. Mansur was 60 years old on March 6. He was a Philadelphian by birth and was educated in Massachusetts. Mr. Man- sur was admitted to the bar at Richmond, M0,, in 1856, and in the same year he re- moved to Chillicothe. where he afterward resided. He was for many years a meme , 2 her of the Chilllcothe board of education, a member of the Democratic state central committee from 1864 'to 1868, a delegate to the national Democratic convention in New York in 1868, prosecuting attorney of Livingston county from 1875 to 1879 and delegate at large to the national Dem- ooratic convention at Chicago in 1884. Mr. Mansur’s congressional career consist- ed of service in the Fiftieth, Fifty-first and Fifty-second congresses. He was defeated for nomination to the Fifty-third congress by Uriah S. It Is Alleged That Dr. Nansen Has Found the Long Sought North Pole. PARIS, April 16.—The Figaro gives our- rency to a rumor that Dr. Nansen, the arctic explorer, has found the north pole, and that it is situated on a chain of mountains. It is also said that Dr. Nan- sen planted the Norwegian flag there. The story is regarded as without foundation. Dr. Nansen’s arctic expedition left for the north on J une 24, 1893, in the sailing vessels Fram. His programme was to make for the New Siberian islands and thence directly north till the Fram should ‘be lmbedded in the ice and drift along with it, follmving the west coast of any land that might be met with northward. The doctor sent a dispatch from Vardoe on Aug. 23, 1893, which he had written at Charabowa, in the Yugorski straits. on the second of that month, reporting that he was about' to sail into the Kara sea. and that so far the Fram had behaved splendidly, especially in forcing her way through the ice that had been met with. LOUIS, April 17.-—At a meeting of the ministers of the Methodist Episcopal church the color line was drawn in the matter of admitting the colored branches ‘of the Epworth league. Rev. Mr. Lenig , claimed that to admit the colored branches i ' would destroy the plans of the league. Rev. A. R.
