Creedo'n Could Not Finish Him. ,
CHICAGO, April l0.——Tho eight round
contest between Dan Creedon and Henry
Baker, which came off before the Triangle
club, Was declared a draw. Creedon had
Baker groggy in the second round, but was
unable to put his man out. From the sec-
ond round on honors were evenly divided.
Creedon did most of the leading through-
- out the fight.

The International Prison Congress.
MANSFIELD, 0., April 10.—Gencral R.
Brinkerhofi, who succeeded ex-Presidenl
Hayes as president of the prison reform
congress of the United States, is in receipi
of a. letter from Albert Riviere, general
secretary of the Prison association, Paris,
in which he states that at a meeting of the
ofiicers of the ministers of the interior ii
was decided that the international prison
congress, which is to take place this yeal
in Paris, will open its session on the 30th
of June next at the college of France. Rep-
resentation at this congress is assured
from 18 foreign governments. These are
England, Belgium, Austria, Denmark. l
Spain, United States, Greece, Hungary, lt-
aly, Japan, Luxemburg. Norway, Bou-
mania, Russia, Servia, Sweden, Switzen
land and Holland.

Dr. Buchanan Breaking Down.
SING SING, April 10.—Dr. Buchanan,
the condemned wife murderer who is un-
der sentence to be executed in the electric
chair on Monday, April 22, has complete-
ly broken down, and if the condemned
man continues to fail it is a question
whether he will be able to Walk to the exe-
cution room. He has lost 30 pounds in
weight since he was resentenced two
weeks ago. ,

SIMLA, April 10.—Two of the brothers
and a cousin of Umra Khan, chief of Jan.
dol, the invader of Chitral, were present
in the last fight between Umra Khan’s
forces and the British when the latter
forced the passage of the Swat river. They
fled after the British victory. It is report
ed that Umra Khan has recalled his picket
troops from Chitral to Kaladarosh. If this
report is true, the Chitral fort, where Mr.
Robertson, the British agent, took refuge,
is virtually relieved.

A Corpse For a. Target.
LEAVENWORTH, Kan, April 10,—The
Kraeg-Jorgensen army rifle was tested
publicly on the Fort Leavenworth _ target
range. This firing Was at a distance from
1,000 to 5,000 yards. At 1,000 yards a
bullet went through nearly 36 inches 01
solid oak without being misshapen in the
least, and at 2,000 yards an inch steel
plate was penetrated. At _1,500 yards a
missile passed through a human cadaver.

French Socialists to Protest.
PARIS. April 10.—-The French socialists
are organizing a meeting to protest againsi
sending a. squadron of French warships to
Kiel in order to take part in the ceremonies
attending the opening of the Baltic and
North Sea canal in J une next. An Alsa-
tian delegate proposed that the Strasburg
monument on the Place de la Concorde be
draped with crepe upon the day of the
opening of the cana‘

The Spanish Gunboat Steamed Away When
She Saw the English Flag.
Bos'rox, April 10.—Today the steamship
Ethelred of the Boston Fruit company,
which was fired upon by a Spanish gunboai
on her outward voyage to Jamaica, arrived
at her dock here. She was boarded by a
representative of the press, who interview-
ed Captain Hopkins, her commander. re-
garding the affair. He regarded it as 01
little consequence and readily gave his
version of it. He said: “On April 1 we
were proceeding on our regular course
when about 11 o’clock in the forenoon, ofl
Cape Maysi, we sighted a. vessel which
we could not at first make out. We were
about a mile from shore. Suddenly the
stranger fired a. blank shot across our bows.
This caused the greatest excitement or
heard my boat, the three passengers or
board, a gentleman from Quincy and twe
from Chicago, being considerably alarmed.
Of course when the shot was fired I stop-
ped and allowed the vessel to come u;
within hailing distance of us. I found ii
was a gunboat, but I could not clearly dis-
tinguish the name. The first part of ii
was ‘Neuevae, ’ and for the life of me 1
could not make out the rest of the Word.
When she saw the British flag floating over
my vessel, she changed her warlike atti-
tude and quietly steamed past us. We then
proceeded to Jamaica, where I laid the
matter before the proper authorities. ”
