graph special says: Express train No. 7,
on the Delaware, Lackawanna and West-
ern railroad, north bound, running at the
rate of 40 miles an hour, dashed into a
freight standing on an open switch at
Forster. miles north of here, at 1
o’clock this morning. Three persons were
killed and a large number injured. The
train was a thi-ou :21 one from New York
at 7:30 p. in. and due in Buffalo this

While this law was enacted some years
ago, no serious _attempt has ever been
made to enforce it The entire matter
seems to he badly mixed up, and the court
alone can straighten it out. Mr. Gould
is still in Miller county.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 1.--The issue of
state 4 per cent bonds for $600,000 to pay
for the new depot building at the ferry
landings in San Francisco was sold to
Farson, Leach & Co. of Boston at 1%
premium. It now transpires that the
seven agents of eastern firms entered into
a combination, Farson, Leach 8; Co. to
buy at 1% and the other firms to share in
the profits. the bonds being new salable
at a premium of 7.

No Knowledge of Arbitration.

Wasnixerox. Nov. 1.—Minister Mon-
donoa of Brazil has not been advised as to
the reported purpose of Brazil to submit
her difierences with France and Italy to
arbitration. The trouble with Italy re-
sulted from riots in Brazil, in which a
number of Italians were killed. Italy has
demanded indemnity, and arbitration has
been suggested by Italy, but until now
without the consent of Brazil.

Senator Jones’ Explanation.

RENO. New, Nov. 1.—John P. Jones
of Nevada and General A. J. Warner of
Ohio addressed the largest meeting ever
held in Reno this evening. Senator Jones
explained why he left the Republican
party, which had honored him with the
senatorship for the fourth time. He is an
advocate of monetary reform, and the Re-
publican party is not. General Warner
spoke until 11:30 o’clock.
