A Handsome 'Monument of . the General
Unveiled at Philadelphia.
PHILADELPHIA. Oct.*25.-—In the pres- "
one. of civic and military dignitaries from
all parts of the country and amid the crack- ~
of musketry and the strains of martial
music the equestrian statue of Major Gen-
eral George B McClellan was unveiled
on the north plaza of the city hall this
afternoon. The gaucral’s widow and their
Eon, Colonel George B. McClellan. Govern-
ors Pattison of Pennsylvania, Werts of
New Jersey, Reynolds of Delaware, Mo-
Corkle of West Virginia and Fisbbaok of
Arkansas; Major General Schofleld, com-
mander in chief of the army; Adjutant
General Ruger and a host of other equally
distinguished persons were present.
The ceremonies at the statue were open-
ad with prayer by the Rev. Dr. McCook.
General Smith then made a stirring ad-
dress, referring to tho dead hero as the
creator of the Army of the Potomac,which
repulsed two formidable invasions and
finally forced its great: rival, the Army of
Northern Virginia, to lay down its arms,
giving to us a blessed peace with honor.
Following- Goneral Smith a. poem written
for'the occasion by Dr. S. Weir Mitchell
was read, and the unveiling ceremonies
were proceeded with. As the flags fell
from the statue a solute of 17 guns was
fired by Battery A of the national guard
of Pennsylvania. and the First Regiment
band played “Hail to the Chief.” The
programme was then resumed with ora-
tions by General William B. Franklin of
Hartford, Governor Pattison and others.
The‘ statue is 23 feet 9 inches from the
ground to the crown of “Little Mac’s”
hat. The casting, made after a. model by
Sculptor H. J. Elll‘oott of Washington,
shows the general in full field uniform.
”Ex-Governor Bedle's Funeral.
JERSEY CITY, Oct. 25.—The First; Pres-
byterian church was crowded today with
prominent Officials, politicians and citi-
zens who had gone there to pay their last;
respects to the memory of the late ex-Gov-
arnor Joseph D. Bedlo. Charles Herr, D.
D., conducted the services. Some of the
pallbearers were Governor Warts, Chan-
cellor McGlll, Samuel.Sloan and ex-Gov-
arnors Ludlow and Leon Abbott. After
the services in the church the body was
removed to Freehold, whore the interment
took place.

Lyons, N. Y., Oct. 25.-—-John, Van and
Samuel Westfall, three sons of J. R.
Westfall of Rochester, where shooting
ducks on Great: Sodus bay. John and Van
were in one bbat and Samuel in another.
John told Van to lower his head while he
shot at a duck. missing it. Van, suppos—
lpg John had discharged both barrels,
raised his head, receiving the entire
charge, which blew off his head.
Philippine Chiefs Submit.
MADRID, Oct. 25.—-A cable message has
been received by the government from the
governor general of the Philippine islands
saying that 1,000 men of the expedition
sent; against the Malays of the island of
Mindanao have reached the left; bank of
the river Agut, where they are erecting
fortifications. The dispatch also says that
three powerful dblofs have submitted.

LONDON, Oct. 25.—A dispatch to The
Times from Vienna says that an agree-
ment has been reached between the min.
istry and the 'difieront. groups for a parlia-
mentary coalition on a new bill to extend
thesuflrago, based on a'n increase of the
electorate on‘d an increase of the seats in
tho retcbstag. The measure will be intro-
duood during the coming winter.
The Cutter Calumet. Finished.
BUFFALO, Oct. 25.-—The revenue cutter
Calumet is completed and cleared for Chi-
cago today. The vessel will not be run at;
night, but will lay in harbors along the
route and steam during the day. Erie
will be the first stop. and the other harbors
to be touched are Cleveland, Detroit, Port
Huron, Sand Beach and the strait of
Mackinac. .
Stolen Property All Recovered.
NEW YORK, Oct. 25.—-Presldent Weir
of the Adams' Express company said to-
day regardlng the recovery of the express
pouch at Calverton, V3.2 “We have not
opened t a bag as yet. and of course I do
not know hat It contains, but I can tell
you now what it should contain. We
have now recovered everything.”

BUFFALO, Oct. Sit—Immediately upon
his return from Albany Assistant Super-
intendent of. Police Cusaok started for
Columbus, 0., to get the necessary req-
uisition papers for the transfer of Clar-
eno‘o Robinson from Cleveland (70 Buffalo.
