breakfasted with the Midland Counties.
Liberal association this morning at the
Grand hotel. In a speech which he made
there he doc itl‘Otl that the government
was bound to bringr forward the measures _
to which it was pied ted. He said that the -
Righthon. Joseph Chamberlain was un-
able to support measures which he once
advocated, lest home rule should be passed
with them. This, Lord Rosebcry said, Was
skating upon thin ice, and this great at-
dent reformer was obliged to sink every
reformupoii which he had set his heart,
because he was unable t agree upon the
precise form which home rule should take.
In regard to the house of lords, Lord
Rosebery said that a minister could not
announce the details of the bill for its re-
formation until the government had re-
ceived the country’s mandate. The speaker
then asserted that he was "r. incnder rath-
er than endcr, ” because he did not
know of any machinery by which the
house of lords muld be ended.
Touching upon the Irish question, Lord
Rosebery said that there were points full
of hope for its settlement. One. was the
closer union of the Irish party and the
Liberals. He felt grateful from the bot-
tom of his heart for the way in which the
Irish came to the assistance of the govern-
ment during the recent critical division.

English in favor of home r"!;.

LONDON, May 25,—In the divorce divi-
sion of the high court of justice today Mr.
Dunhill and Baroness Frerichs were found
guilty. The court also found that Mrs.
Dunhill, the petitioner, who asked for a.
legal separation from her husband, had
not connived in the intimacy betWeen Mr.
Dunhill and the baroness, as was claimed
by the defendants.
Two Court Martinis Want Maxwell.
OMAHA, May 25.—By order of the secre-
tary of war, Lieutenant Marcus Maxwell,
who is wanted as a witness in the Laney
court martial at Fort Spelling, Mind, is
under close arrest at Fort Omaha. Max-
well will not be aIIOWed to go to Fort
Snelling until after his own trial on the
charge of duplicating his pay accounts.

OLATHE, Kan, May 25.—Mrs. Lease is a
very sick woman. Dr. Robin of Topeka
and several physicians from Kansas City
have held a. consultation, and her son
Charles is with her. She has sciatic rheu-

Man’s inhumanity.
It 'is an unfortunate and sorrow-mov-
ing fact that there are at this time and
in this country men who would plunge
this nation into all the indescribable
horrors of a. great war in order that
the present discontent and dangerous
restlessness may have an outlet, and
that industries now dormant may be
awakened. These thoughtless or vi-
cious advocates of strife see in their
program conflict with Great Britain,
occupation as soldiers for the large
number. of unemployed, abnormal acti-
vity in agriculture and manufactures,
and vast opportunity for political
spoils. The inhumanity of the propo-
sition is brutally plain and it cannot
but be met with disapproval of the
great mass of the American people—
the same people who would, were there
any sufficient cause, shed the last drop
of their blood in defense of a principal
to uphold which the stars and stripes
had been invoked. If any foreign
power had unrighteously offended the
dignity of the United States or had
dealt unjustly with an American citizen
and then impudently refused to apolo-
gize for the wrong. war would perhaps
be the only means by which redress
could be secured, but to insist upon
a deliberate quarrel with some power
