“Steeple Charlie” was in town to-day
shaking hands with old friends. Charlie
is at work in Bethel on the Catholic
church in that town,which was damaged
by the recent cyclone.
Messrs. O’Brien and Sherwood will
open a hat store on Washington street
next week. They weIe getting wealthy
too rapidly at their New York store
and disposed of it at a terrible sacrifice.
William Johnson and Daniel McIn-
tyre are at work upon an athletic exhi-
bition to be given in this city in the
near future. When the event takes
place Ryan, who defeated J amlson will
take part and give an exhibtion of the
manly art.
Last evening as Dick Sweeney was
crossing the tracks of the Consolidated
road at Washington street he was run
into by a wagon and his bicycle broken.
Dick escaped with without injury, but
the driver of the wagon is knoWn
notwithstanding he drove off at a rapid
gate after the collision. Dick proposes
that he shall pay for the bicycle. ‘
About twenty members of the Uncas
tribe of Red Hen visited their uncles 1n
the Pegusset tube, Danbury, Thursday
night. There wasa feast of corn and
venison (woodchuck), long talks, ex-
change oi wampum, smoking of pipes
made in Clay county,filled with tobac-
co grown in Danbury, etc. etc., ending
with a pow- wow. After all the owl de-
gree was worked and it was daylight
when the South Norwalk braves startedfi
for home.

Editor B. A. Peek of the Naugatuck
Enterprise was on Thursday served
with papers in a suit for libel brought
by Chief of Police George M. Hosford
of Naugatuck. The suit is the result
of an alleged libelous article printed 1n
the Enterprise In which it was charged
that Chief Hosford robbed an Italian
prisoner of $3.10. Damages are placed
at 82 ,150.
Shortly after 2 o ’clock Thursday af-
ternoon fire bro e out In the residence
of Mrs. James bbott in Waterbury.
Some of the children had beeii' playing
with matches while left alone in the
house and the fire spread with great
rapidity. After a short fight the fire
department succeeded In getting it 11n-
der control. The loss 1s about $1, 000.
What was once Christ church, West-
port now Clifi‘ hotel, so called has a
cellar. Into it are being placed some
half ahuudred barrels of sweet cider
by Mr. Lloyd Nash, son of the_ owner
of the properity. The cider in that
place ought to keep in good condition
until the night before next Fourth of
July, when the bell ringing contingent,

At the almshouse' in New Ha ven, Mrs.
Mary Seymour, aged 60, went up into
the attic Thursday and tried to hang
herself by means of a clothes line.
She was discovered in the act of ad-
justing the noose. A. physician was
called who found the old lady unhurt.
but suffering under deep depression
caused by her sad lot and the death re-
cently of a dear friend and chum, Mrs.
Harriet Small. The old lady has been
an inmate of the almshouse for the last
seven years.
His Sister to Guard him.
SARATOGA, N. Y., Nov. 3,—The dis-
puted matter of the commissioner of the
person and estate of Frank Thompson, the
insane wealthy New York lawyer, has
been settled by the resignation of his
cousin, James L. Scott, and the appoint-
ment of his sister, Miss Alice Thompson,
of Ballston Spa.
To Bring Back Henterman.
ELIZABETH, N. J., Nov. 3. —Chief of
Police George C. Tenney sailed yesterday
on the steamer Columbia for Southampton
to bring back Ewald Henterman, the de-
faulting insurance agent, and Freda and
Elmer Laucks, the children be enticed
away with him.
