CHICAGO, June l5.—The first serious ac-
cident since the opening of the fair oc-
curred on Midway Plaisance at 6:30 last
evening. One man mangled and dead and
five men and women terribly injured tell
the tale of the last trip of a coasting train
on the ice railway. The victims of the
catastrophe are:

InjuredéMiss May Ayres, Chicago, both
arms broken, jaw crushed in and internal
injuries; Carl Frick, member of the Ger-
man Cavalry band in the German village
on the Plaisance,.right arm broken, nose
broken and back and legs hurt; John J a-
cobs, Algerhin village, jaw broken and
crushed about the head; Henry Jacobs.
Algerian village, left leg cut and bruised
and internal injuries; D. S. Salter; Chicago,
right leg cut and bruised; Henry H. Me-
Leroth, Austin, 1115., legs cut, finger
broken and back hurt.

A Monster Parade, Followed by Exercises
in German and English.
2. CHICAGO, June 15.—The attendance at
the exposition yesterday was very large,
the paid admissions being 83,452. There
was nothing out of the routine of sightsee-
ing, yet the fine weather brought an army
of people. A tremendous crowd is pouring
in today (German day), and the subjects
of Emperor William attthe German build-
ing are already claiming that the total at-
tendance will eclipse that of last Thurs-
day, “Princess’ day,” when the paid ad-
missions were about 125,000. By coinci-
dence not premeditated the celebration
falls on the anniversary of the coronation
of the present emperor of Germany. This
fact, however, will not figure to any ex-
tent in the festivities, the primary object
of which is to do honor to Columbus and
glorify the land he discovered. -
There was a monster parade of all the
German societies this afternoon down
town, after which the marchers took trains
to the park,where the exercises take place.
Two stands have been erected in front of
the German building, one for the orchestra
and chorus and the other for the invited
guests and speakers. The speaking here
will be in German, the orator of the day
being Hon. Carl Schurz. (finer speakers
are Baron Von Hollenhen, German ambas-
sador, and Imperial German Commis-
sioner Wermuth. At the conclusion of
these ceremonies the Germans will march
to Festival hall, where the English exer-
cises will be held, the exposition orchestra
furnising the music.
In addition to the German celebration,
Indiana and Arkansas dedicated their
buildings today. The Hoosier ceremonies
began at 1 o’clock. and included addresses
by Colonel B. F. Havens, executive com-
missioner, Hon. C. Studebaker and Gover-
nor Matthews. The-Arkansas exercises
included, speeches by Governor Fishka
and Colonel Joseph Mitchell, of Little .
Rock.
Tifiany’s magnificent exhibit, one of the
few real gems in the American section of
Manufactures building, was formally
opened yesterday afternoon, and hundreds
admired the beautiful collections of rare
jewels, handsome vases and silver and gold
ware.
Eulalie at the Falls.
NIAGARA FALLS, June 15.—~The special
train bearing the Infanta Eulalie and party
from Chicago arrived here via the Michi-
gan Central road last night. At the special
request of the princess no formal recep-
tion was tendered her. Today the party
are visiting the various points of interest.

: scented as Protestant Episcopal bishops of
. China-and Japan, at St. Thomas’ church,
corner Fifty-third street and Fifth avenue.
This-was the first occasion in the history
ofthe- Protestant Episcopal church that
two foreign missionary bishops have been
,consecrated’ at the same time and place-
, (Eight bishops acted as consecrators, and
there were present a large number of
clergymen from all over the country. The
clergyman were all attired in their vest-
ments and were seated in the front pews
of the church. The body of the. church
was comfortably filled. The consecration
ceremonies were very elaborate and im-
pre'ssive. ‘
Bishop Abram Newkirk Littlejohn, of
Long Island. presided, and those who as-
sisted him were Bishop Alfred Barry, of
Windsor, Eng; Bishop John Scarborough,
of New Jersey; Bishop Thomas Benedict
Lyman, of North Carolina; Bishop Thomas
Underwood Dudley, of Kentucky; Bishop.
Leighton Coleman, of Delaware; Bishop
George Herbert Kinsolving, of Texas, and
Bishop George William Peter-kin. of West
Virginia.
Bishop Graves was born in Auburn, N.
Y., and is 34 years old. He goes to China

Bismarck on the Army Bill.
BERLIN, June 15.—Prince Bismarck, in
an interview, comes out in favor of an in-
crease in the defensive strength of the em-
pire, but not on the lines laid down by the
government in the army bill. He does not
approve of adding to the infantry or cav-
alry strength of the army. but maintains
that the increase should be made tothe ar-
tillery forces, which, he declares, would
decide the battles of the future. The
prince said that Germany was fully able
to bear the added cost that would be en-
tailed by adding to her military strength.
Crash on the Nickel Plate.
BUFFALO, June 15.—Five men were in-
jured, one fatally, and twenty cars smashed
in a wreck on the Nickel Plate road at
Hamburg. A freight train of thirty cars
was coming down the grade, when it broke
in two. The brakemen were not aware of
the fact, and the engineer did not stop un-
til he reached the foot of the hill. The
runaway cars came down the grade at
fifty miles an hour. There was a fright-
ful crash when they struck the forward
section, and cars were telescoped and piled
up to a, height of twenty-five feet:

Sperry. whose satchel was found at Island
Park yesterday afternoon, and who is be-
lieved to have drowned himself in the
river, was an agent for E. K. Hum 85 00.,
whoelsale lightning rod dealers,Pittsburg.
Letters in his satchel indicated his inten-
tion to commit suicide. Sperry seems to
have been despondent over money matters.’
Changes at Oxford University.
OXFORD, 0., June 15.—The board of trus-
tees of the Miami university accepted the
resignations .of William A. Merrill, pro-
gfessor' of Latin language, and Joseph V.
Collins, professor of mathematics and as-
tronomy. Edwin B. Thompson, of Penn-
sylvania, was elected for the chair-of math-
ematics. ‘Ex-Secretary of the Interior John
W. Noble made an address yesterday.

CAMDEN, N. J., June 15.—'A reported

tion of Wrightsville. . Three physicians
are attending the case, but nothing can be
learned as to the facts of the case.
Three Soldiers Drowned.
CHATHAM. June 15.-—A dreadful accident
occurred: here - by which several persons
lost their-lives. A barge smashed into a
boat load of soldiers, three of whom were
crushed and drowned, and several shock-
ingly maimed.

combine and such well known firms as
McCormick & Co., of Chicago; Champion
company, of Springfield, 1115,, and the
Wood Reaper wor‘ks. In order tomake a
test case suit has first been brought against
D. M. Osborne 8:. Co., of Auburn, in the
Unimd States district court for the north-
ern district of New York. The complaint
sets np.that£that company and others had
for a number of years been engaged in
manufacturing harvesters on ,which a
device is used the essentials of which the
complainant holds letters patent for.
