Mrs E. J. Hill with her two daugh-
ters left for Washington Monday where
the week will be spent. in attendance
upon the Congress of the Daughters of
the Revolution. Mrs. Hill IS the only

' who has responded to the invitation to
prepare a paper to be read before this
patriotic assemblage. Her subject IS

Stabbed Five Times-
Ou the trip of the Nutmeg State
from Bridgeport. to New York Friday
night, Joseph Allen, the colored cook,
and James Keegan, a deck hand, had a
dispute. Bloxxs folloxx cd but they new
pulled apart by the officers before eith-
er was injured. The men again met on
the main deck near the engine room.
Hot words ensued, and the .negro sud-
denly drew a knife, stabbing Keegan
five times iii the shoulder.

School Children.
The figures of the school census of
1892 are 167,820 an increase of 3.767 in
the year between October 1, 1891211161
1892-. At- the accepted ratio of total
population to children of school age,
that indicates an increase in the state
of over 17,000 persons in one'year.
The indicated increase for two and a
half years immediately following 1890
census is about 31 000.

A Timely Discovery.
Last Tuesday as George Taft xxas on
his way home his attention was attract-
ed to a flame 1n the front room of Theo-
dore Olsen’s house on High street. He
ran up on the piazza and found that
a kerosene lamp was on fire. He then
gave the door—bell several vigorous
pulls, and succeeded in ardnsing Mr.
Olsen who had retired. On being told
of the situation Mr. Olsen hastily
grabbed the lamp, at the risk of being
bur,ned and hurled it out into the snow
before any serious damage had been
done. No doubt Mr. Taft’s timely dis-
covery saved x'. but might hax e prox ed
a serious fire. rThe lamp had been left
burning axx aiting the return home of a
member of the family.
Dr. William 8. Todd.
Dr William S. Todd, aged '33, of
Bidgefield, died suddenly Sunday night
of pneumonia. He was 1 epiesentatixe
to the Connecticut Legistatuie in 1888,
aMason, an Odl Felloxx a member or
the Twilight Club of New York, the
Fairfield County Medical Society, the
Danbury Medical Society and the
American Academy of Medicine. He
leaves a widow and txxo sons. He was
for many years the I). idgefield special
correspondent of the GAZETTE and
always an earnest friend and actively
interested in this paper 5 xx elfare. He
xx us aboxe all a high toned, upright,
Christian gentleman. Peace to his
ashes.
Be Happy. Says Dr. Coilyer.
Rev. Robert Collyer told what he
thought of “The True Lent” Sun-
day. He said he couldn’t see why
people walked about during the Len-
ten season as though they xx ere mour n-
ing for somebody It was much bet-
ter to be joyous and happy.
“There is enough trouble in this
world without making more,” he said.
“Why not make the time one of joy?
It rests with everybody whet-her or not.
they shall fast. In olden times a man
thought that he had to fast in order to
be good. That may be so. but there is
every reason to believe, that it isn’t.

Affecting Street Railways.
A sub committee of the representa-
tives of the various city. wove-1 nments of
the state held a meeting in New Haven
on Saturday for the purpose of dra.’t
. ing a bill relating to street railway
companies. The first section provides
: that any company char ter ed to operate

a street railway in any town, city or
borough, shall cause a plan of the
streets and proposed grades, kind of
tracks to be used and the motive power,
to be presented to the mayor and court
of common council selectmen or ward-
en and burgesses', who shall give. no-
tice of a public hearing to 3115 persons
interested. If the plan is rejected an
appeal may be taken to the Superior
Court, where the matter shall be heard
and determined.
Section 2 gives the officials full direc-
tion and Control over the placing, erec-
tion, construction and maintenance of‘
any tracks, Wires, conductors, fixtures,
etc. , including the power of designat-
ing the kind, :,quality and finish there-
of. Section 3 limits the time of the
construction of any road receiving a
' charter from the General Assembly to
the first day of December prior to the '
next session of the Legislature.-
Under Section 4 if my company fails
for six months to operate its road, the
