Three weeks after Berkman’s attempt
upon Mr. Frick’s life a cablegram was re-
ceived from Mr. Carnegie. The exact
wording of Mr. Carnegie’s cablegram is
unknown, but its contents are {sufficiently
indicated by the following message re-
turned by Mr. Frick:
“No; that would encourage anarchy.”
It was the talk of the office at that time
that Mr. Carnegie had asked for a truce
of some sort. Mr. Frick was still suffer-
ing from his wounds. This is said to have
been the first and last request for a truce
that came from Mr. Carnegie.
