Will the Mugwump Drive ?
The attitude of the incoming Demo-
cratic president towards the mugwump
will be watched with considerable in-
terest. Eight years ago the mugwump
sat on the box and drove, and he hopes
to do the same thing again. The size
and extent of the Democratic victory
ought to satisfy Grover Cleveland that
the mugwumps did not tip the scale
this time, for had the 4-11-44 mugwumps
voted against Mr. Cleveland he would
still have been elected. The mug-
wump however does not propose to be
frozen-out this time if he can help it,
and already his wise 'counsels have been
thrust upon Mr. Cleveland. The mug-
wump wouldlike to have Mr. Cleve-
land call almost daily at his wisdom
sh0p for freshly cut slices of advice,
which if he could not exchange for a
fat office for some relative, for the :
mugwump hates office-seekers unless
they have u :mugwump “0.. K.” on
their back, he would than donate it,
rather than not have it used at all.
The chief diversions of the mugwump
are to smash tariffs, burn incense and
beat tom-toms before the civil service
Jess, and hurl anathemas at the men
who win political victories. Mr. Cleve—
land professes to be a good Democrat
and deeply concerned for the perpetua-
tion of his party and its policy, but if
he wishes to disintegrate his party and
inflame Republican zeal he can doi
quickly and effectually by becoming
the mouthpiece and agent of the mug-
wumps. The country has decided to
try tariff revision and not smashing.
Changes in the tariff must come slowly
and not with mugwump speed. While
the salaries connected with the Civil
service commission will always puts
halo upon that useless piece of admin-
istrative furniture, no one now-a-days
has much confidence in the Commis-
sion or its methods. Mr. Cleveland
should cut loose from the mugwump
and his vagaries. The mugwump ideas
may do to pack away in never-to-be
read books, but they are not the stuff
that wins victories. If Mr. Cleveland
hopes to see a Democratic successor
elected he must be a Democratic presi-
dent through and through, and thor-
oughly in touch with his party. Hard-
ly in the history of the country has
such an opportunity presented itself to
any political leader. Mr. Cleveland
must not presume too much in his vic-
tory however, for great as it was it was
due somewhat to the same causes that
elected Mr. Harrison in 1888. Mr.
Cleveland and Mr. Harrison both for-
got the friends who elected them, and
showered their favors on men who ap-
proximated to the mugwump standard,
and when they came up for re-election
they both missed the support of those
who had been turned down to win
mugwump smiles. The unwritten law
against a “third term” ties up Mr.
Cleveland’s hands to a certain extent
so that he cannot work any irreparable
mischief, still he can do his party much
good or ill according as he isa Demo-
crat or a mugwump. Grover, beware
0f the mugwumps. Modesty would
dictate that the mugwuinp should this
time. hang on the rear steps or the
Democratic chariot and not drive.
