night. 602 the second night and 1,031
the third night. When the- contests

TO old playgoers the reappearance Of
Miss Ada Dyas in London in the char-
acter of Goneril is one of exceptional
interest—first, because an interval of
many years as the leading actress of
America has made her name unfamiliar
to' the majority; secondly, owing to
her once ’more being united in art with
the actor with whom her earliest suc-
cesses were identified.
The first brilliant success ever- made
byHenry I rving in London was in the
character of Rawdou Scudamore in
“ Hunted Down,” written by Dion
Boucicault and produced at the St.
James’s Theatre in the early “sixties,”
under the management of Miss Her-
bert. The wife of the dissolute hero
in this remarkable play was Ada Dyas
who had before come,to the front
as the pale-faced, white-lipped myste-
rious Phoebe Marks in a very clever
version of “ Lady Audley’s Secret.”. In
those days it was an open question.
which artist would eventually ,become
the more famonsw—Ada Dyasor Henry
Irving. They separated; their. dra-
matic destinies were severed ; and now
they meet—each successful—as Lear
and Goneril.
A South Brooklyn Scandal.
Says the' New York Recorder : A do-
mestic scandal which has been much
discussed in South Brooklyn social ’cir-
cles, has at last been brought into the
courts, and Andrew Grafi',a well-known
business man, has commenced an actiOn
in the Supreme Court Of Kings county
to have his marriage with Mary A.
Grafl' annulled, on the ground that at
the time he married her she had a hus-
band living. ‘ -
The couple have not lived together
for over a year, Mrs. Grafi‘ having resi-
ded for a time at South Norwalk, Ct.,
and is living now at Schuylerville, N.
Y. She was about to bring proceed-
ings against her husband for limited
divorce, she says, on the ground of
cruel and inhuman treatment, when
the matter was blocked by the service
upon her of the summons and complaint
in her husband’s suit'for annulment of
the marriage.
She admits that she was once mar-
ried to a man named Fitzpatrick. but
says she left him after six years Of mar-
ried life and secured a decree of di-
vorce. It was afterward that she met
and married Mr. Grafi‘, and she claims
that she had a perfect right to do 80..
While living at South Norwalk she
had the plaintifl’s boy,her step-son,with
her, and the boy’s story Of her conduct
promises to create a sensation when
told inI-court. .

annual appropriation of 325 be granted
them now as it was wanted for the pa-
rade at Stamford.- It was so voted.
The Fire Police stated that their ap-

The report of the chief-of-police was
read and accepted. There were 21 ar-
rests, of which number three were fe-
males. It also reported misconduct on
the part Of one of the officers. This
matter was referred to the pohce com-
mittee for investigation.

laying of paving stone .and macadam
on Main street be awarded to C. W.
