The Worst Storm In a Lonar Tlme.
The storm of Saturday night was one
of the'hardest experienced in this sec-
tion for along time. The rain, came
down in torrents and the li htning was
unusually vivid, and the t under was
continuous and terrific. Considerable
damage was done by the lightning, and
the deluge of rain washed out the
streets on the hill roads, causing a great
amount of extra work to be done in or-
der to place them in repair.
It is not known that the lightning
struck any private buildings in town,
but it burned out several telephones
and the long distance Wire cast was
burned out at the pole in front of the
central office.
At the electric light station there
was a flashing and continuous snappino
not unlike to the roll of musketry, an
considerable damage was done. An
armature was burned out, and an “ex-
citer” or annex-to an incandescent dy-
namo, was ruined. 'The loss is estima-
ted atover $200. '
At New Canaan, ou the road to Silver
Mine, 9. large barn belonging to LeWIs
B. St. John was struck by lightning
and totally destroyed together with its
contents of several hundred tons of
grain, hay, etc. and also two calves.
It was one of the largest barns in the
county. The live stock consisting of
several cows, horses, etc., were res-
cued. The loss which reaches the
thousands was partially covered by in-
surance.
At Saugatuck, in rear of the Hotel
Stanley, a barn was fired by the elec-
tric fluid and burned to the ground.
At Georgetown the lightning struck
and set fire to a small building occupied
by Wallace Williams as a telegraph of-
fice and jewelry store. The building
was burned to the ground but Mr. Wil-
liams succeeded in saving most of his
jewelry stock. ‘
At Bridgeport the storm was very se-
vere. Mathew Holroyd’s house on No-
ble avenue was struck, ripping off the
roof, timbers and doing considerable
other damage. It also visited Baris
block on East Main street, the Fairst
steel works; trees were stripped of
their bark and had branches torn off in
various localities; the telephone and
electric light service was considerably
damaged and several persons were
knocked senseless.
At Stratford a barn belonving to
John Peck was struck and tota 1y con-
sumed, with three head of cattle, agri-
cultural implements and 15 acres of rye,
entailing a loss of over $5,000.
At Danbury the storm was also very
severe and a arge amount of damage
was done. Other towns in this vicinity
were also visited with like results.
Altogether it was the hardest and
most disastrous storm of the season.
The transformer in _ front of the
horse railway station was burned out
and the lamps in the de ot, Meseberg’s,
Undertaker Jennings’, wyer’s harness
store and Leobold’s barber-shop were
put out. In the latter place the em-
ployees were forced to stop work. At
the horse car depot Messrs. Brady and
Kellogg felt a nausea at the stomach
ivhich did not leave them for some
ours.
President Clark’s Report.
The annual report of the directors of
the Consolidated road has been pre-
pared. It will be submitted to the
stockholders at their meeting in New
Haven, October 19.
The total income from July 1, 1891,
to June 30, 1892, was $2,102,939.04.
The operating expenses were $8,273,-
010.69. The net earnings applicable to
dividends were $2,162,820.89. The
amount paid in dividends was $2,103,-
750, leaving a surplus of $58,530.89.
There has been charged to capital ac-
counts during the year a total of $2,-
185,052.24.
President Clark says that the control
of the Housatonic, the Danbury and
Norwalk, and the New Haven and
Derby roads would be of advantage to
the Consolidated road. The leases of
the roads will be submitted to the
stockholders at the annual meeting, as
will also the lease of the Providence
and Worcester road.
The mileage of the road owned and
operated by the company is 149.14
miles, and that of leased lines is stated
to be 358.94, making the total number
of miles operated 508.08.
Of the rolling stock of the company
there are 239 locomotives, 659 passen-
ger, combination, drawing room, bag-
gage and mail and Adams’ express cars,
and 4,452 fi'eight cars of all kinds.
In reference to the use of electricity
as a motive power President Clark
says: “If electricity as a motive power
becomes commercially practicable, the
two interior tracks of the four now in
process of construction between New
York and New Haven with their im-
proved grades and alignment and ab-
solute freedom from grade crossings,
will prove especially adapted for its
use.” '
The Corner Stone Laid.
Nearly five hundred persons were in-
terested spectators in the laying of the
corner stone of the new St. Paul’s
chapel, on Berkeley street, Saturday
afternoon. The Visiting clergy pre-
ceded by the Wardens and Vestry of
'St. Paul’s Church, marched from the
rectory to Berkeley street, where the
usual ceremonies in the laying of corner
stones of the P.'.E. church was duly ob-
served. The stone was lowered into its
place under the direction of the archi-
tect. Archdeacon Rev. Dr. Tatlock of
Stamford, made a prayer, and remarks
fitting forthe occasion were made by
Bishop Williams. The exercises were
interspersed .with singing by the choir
and responswe readings. Among the
twenty-five or more visiting. cfergy
present [were Revs. Dr. Van Renssel-
ear, formerly president of Hobart Col-
lege, and Rev. Gouvernier M. Wilkins,
both of New York. After the exercises
the clergy returned to the Parish rooms
on Wall street where they were ban-
queted by the ladies of the Parish. ,
The ceremonies throughout were of
an interesting and fitting character,and
the day Will ever be a memorable one
in the annals of the society.

The funeral of Mr. William Bills-
borough was attended from his late
residence on Wilton avenue Saturday
afternoon, Rev. F. E. Robbins of the
Baptist Church, officiating. Among the

David Pettit is dead at his home in
Danbury, aged 84 years.
