The negotiations were carried out by J. Pierpont Morgan and William Rockefeller in their own names, but there is no doubt that they were acting for .the New Haven company. and that their action will_be ratified by the full board, if indeed it has not been already. . This is the most important railroad deal that has been consummated in New England for many years. It not only ad s 192 miles to the New York 'and New Haven system, but it strikes a rather dec1s1ve blow in the long con- test that has been carried on with much bitterness and at great cost to both, be- tween that road and the New York and New England. For several years the New _York and .the Housatonic have been in close alliance with each other in mutual hostility to the New Haven road, and have been "making a combined ef- fort to procure by legislation and other- wise a rival through line between Bos- ton and New York, which should give the New England an entrance into this city and furnish new business and *in- creasedifacilities to a part of the Hon- satonic system. The fight over this question in the Connecticut Legislature of 1889 was one of the bitterest and most prolonged ever known. Besides being enormously expensive to both, it was prolific of scandals on both sides’. It was With a VleW to preventing the re- currence of such a centest, as well as of strengthening its own position, that the New _Haven company some tine ago de- termined to purchase the rivalproperty as soon as reasonable terms could be obtained. from Bridgeport to Pittsfield, Massa- chusetts, _passing through Lenox, to which paint the summer travel is large and profitable, and taking the traffic of Western Massachusetts to the shore of the Sound whence it has heretofore reached this city by water lines. Under the consolidation, the New Haven road Will take this trafic through without transfer. The len th of this line is 111 miles. In short, i the system are the Danbury and N orwalk, 27 miles; the State Line Branch, 11 .miles; the Brookfield Branch, 6 miles; the Haw- leyVille Branch, 6 miles; the Ridgefield Branch, 4 miles ; and the New Haven and Derby, 27 miles. ' The purchasing company acquires also the very valuable terminal proper- ties of the Housatonic at Bridgeport, and the New Haven and Derby at New Haven, and very likely the transaction Will lead to the purchase of the Wilson Pomt property at. N orwalk, now used by the Housator‘uc Company for the transfer of freight to boats. The pos- session of these properties by a rival the plans for four-tracking the main line, and prevented some very impor- tant changes in Bridgeport and New Haven in the “lay-out” of the road, ger stations and office buildings. These improvements will soon be made, the four tracks Will be completed for the entire distance between New York and New Haven, and much better accom- modations for the public will be fur- nished at Bridgeport and New Haven. The first and most important effect of the consolidation will be that the trav- eling public will be greatly benefited in the added faculties and better accom- modations that will result from having the connections of the main line man- aged by a Single corporation and run— ning harmoniously, without clashing of interests or _div1ded responsibility. To the purchasing company it brings very solid advantages in relieving it of an annoying if not dangerous rivalr and placing it in an almost impregnab e po- sition. With the absorption of the Housatonic system it comes into con- trol of the entire railroad mileage of the State of Connecticut, with the ex- ception of the New York and New En -. land and the New London and N ortfi- cm, which is leased to the Vermont Central.
