The assets of the Mutual Life Insurance Company are often referred to as “The Great
Family Fund’ held by the Trustees of the Company for its policy-holders.
During the year 1891, The Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York paid to its
policy-holders from this fund the enormous sum of $18,755,711,86; the largest
amount paid in any one year by any Life Insurance Company in the world.

Mrs. Homer R. Baldwin of New York
was one of the injured in the Christmas
eve disaster at Hastings on the New
York Central road. Her mother and
Sister 1n the same compartment with
‘her were killed, but her husband, who
had gone into the smoker, 'was saved.
Mrs. Baldwm, if she recovers, will
have no cars and no hands. Her head
from her eyes back beyond the crown
.is nearly devoid of flesh and in one
place there is a spot as large as the
hand where the skull was not only

skull has not been injured she may re~

Opening Prisoners’ Mail.
Postofiice Inspector Pendleton has
informed Jailer Sibley of Brooklyn
this State, that he violates the law in
following the usual custom of opening
prisoners’ mail ; also that. he is com-
pelled to bring the mail from the post-
office. The Hon. George G. Sill‘ of
Hartford, advises the jailer hereafter
to get a written agreement from the
prisoners that he may open their mail
as a condition of his bringing it from
the office. Jailer Sibley considers that
it is of vital importance, not only to
his own safety, but to the safe keeping
and good discipline of the inmates that
this method be adopted.
The custom of opening the mail, it is
said, is followed all over the State. In
Bridgeport the practice is not followed
except in cases of bound-over prisoners
or where there is reasonable suspicion.

United Workmen.
About 500 delegates and members of
the order were in attendance at the
opening of the fourteenth annual ses-,,
sion of the Grand Lodge of New Eng»
land, Ancient Order of United Work-
men, at Berkeley Hall, Boston, Tues-
day. Grand Master Workman John
C. Bickford of Manchester, N. H., was
in the chair, and all the grand officers
were present.
The reports of the grand officers
were presented and accepted. They
show the order in New England to be
in a very prosperous condition. 'Dur-
ing 1891 twenty-nine subordinate lodges-
were instituted, making the number
272. There were 132 deaths and 11 as-
sessments, realizing $291,330. The to-
tal receipts of the grand lodge were
$29,140 and the expenses $21,687.
The various appropriation were made
for the expenses of the current year.
Tuesday the annual banquet was
held ‘at the American House. The
grand master workman presided and
addresses were made by prominent
members of the order. About 300 were
present. '
The session will be continued to-day.

Entertainment at Soldiers’ Home.
Some twenty'or more people from S0.
Norwalk visited the Soldiers’Home Tues
day evening. Among the party were
several of our leading vocal and in-
strumental artists as well as readers
and elocutionists. To cite a few of the
names: Horace Hatch and Frank
Nash, Mrs. James N ewkirk, Mrs. Imo—
gene Ross, the Misses Punzelts, vocal-
ists to whom we have all listened with
delight, Miss Maggie Weed and Miss
Maggie McClure. whose readings are
alwas well presented, and Mrs. Keep,
who as an elocutionist, never fails in
pleasing. A feature of the occasion
was a piano quartette by Miss Florence
Benedict, Miss Alice Dunning and the
Misses Disbrow. The visit was pro-
posed and carried to success under the
supervision of Miss Nathan Campbell.
The entertainment from start to finish
was a highly creditable one, and fully
deserving of the praise accorded it by
the veterans one and all. The visitors
arrived home in time to hear the bells
toll off 10 o’clock.

band of Miss Geoffrey's, the actress,
who killed herself with ether in her
apartments at New York, on last Mon-
day night, proves to be Henry N. Fan—
ton, J r., a Danbury hatter. His father
is Past Commander of the Connecticut
Department of the Grand Army of the
Republic. Not even his intimate
friends were aware of his relations
with Miss Geoffrey's.
