Dr. Joseph \V. Alsop, of Middletown,
died at his cottage at Fenwick‘about
11:30 Wednesday morning, of heart dis-
ease. He was giving directions-to his
gardener relative to setting out some
plants about the cottage, when he sud-
denly'fcll to the ground. A messenger
was sent to the Point to telephone to
Middletown for Dr. Edgerton, but
when he returned the end had come.

The news of his death brought a
shock to the community where he re-
sided, not alone on account of its sud-
denness, but because he was everybody’s
friend. Being possessed of large means,
his acts of benevolence and charity
were many, but always bestowed, with
modesty and lack of ostentation. He
kept standing orders with the butcher
and baker, whereby many poor fami-
lies were kept from hunger, and yet no
one knew of it save the parties imme-

Joseph \Vright Alsop was born in
New York City in August, 1838. He
entered Wesleyan University in the
class of 1858, but remained less than a
year and then went to the Sheffield
Scientific School. In 1860 he entered
Columbia College and in 1861 received
the degree of M. D. from the medical
department of the University of the
City of New York. In 1869 he married

second District 1882-6. He was a mem-
ber Of the state board of agriculture
from 1883, trustee of the Hospital for
the Insane at Middletown from 1880, of
the Industrial School for Girls from
1881, visitor of the Sheffield Scientific
School and connected with many local
institutions. He was the democratic
candidate for lieutenant-governor last
fall and had begun quo warranlo pro- .
ceilings against General Merwin for the
place. '

In his life that amiable gentleman
coveted and enjoyed the esteem and

amount.

The entertainment committee held a
meeting last night at 9 o‘clock and
mapped out the course of entertain-
ments for next year. It will be a finer
course than the one of last year and in-
cludes the following celebrated com-
panies and artists. Boston Symphony
Orchestral club (ten people), the Dud:
ley Buck Quartette, Jessie Couthoui
Concert C0,, Marshall P. \Vilder Con-
cert Co. and Leland T. Powers. The
