Venerable St. Paul’s.
The'follo‘wing interesting and care-
fully prepareduarticle about the: oldest
Episcopal church in America, is from
the gifted pen of Rev. Mr. G. W. Nich-
ols and published in the Philadelphia
“Standard of the Cross,” and which the
GAZETTE is glad to copy:— .
Nonwannz—The parish of St. Paul
is venerable. It has existed 150 years,
dating back fifty years before the Revo-
lution. It covers a period of many
striking historical events. Since the
death ome. Cooper Mead, it has been
under the care and pastoral Supervision
of the Rev. Charles M. Selleck, who was
Dr. Mead’s aSSistant for 15 years, pre--
vious to his death. The Rev. Mr. Sel
leck’s rectorship covers a period of
something like a quarter of a century,
and has been one of most devoted and
unselfish labor. He has established
several missions in the parish; and the
number of communicants has increased
from 300 to 600. Previous to his enter
ing on his duties as a clergy man, it is
11'o1thv of notice also, that he founded,
and carried on successfully , one of the
largest and most important educational
institutions of the state, training young
men for college and various callings in
life, many of whom became prominent
11nd useful men in the community, and
not :1 few clergyman have received their
education at the Selleck school. HiS
able and impressive sermon and his
striking elocution giving force and
beauty to therendering of the church
services and his indefatigable labors
for the spiritual go: :l of others have
given hima name which will long be
remembered 1n St. Paul’s parish.
For reasons best known to himself
and much to the regret of his people.
Mr. Selleck, has resigned the parish.
About six months ago, a few families
withdrew from St. Paul’s and after a
long and closely contested effort to gain
per mission from the Bishop and stand-
ing committee of the diocese to form a
new parish within the limits of St.
Paul, they suéceeded and such a parish
has been formed with the title of
“Grace Church.”- They have built a
new church and. purchased aparsonage.
This church which holds about 300 is
supplied with an organ, and boy choir,
and has called the Rev. S. H. Watkins,
as its rector. Since the resignation of
the Rev. Mr. Selleck, St. Paul has
made a very fortunate and excellent
choice of a new rector; the Rev.- S. T.
Graham of New York, who has just en-
tered on his duties as pastor of this old
and time honered parish. All seem‘
pleased. He is a man of striking and:'I '
commanding powers, an able, earnest
and eloquent preacher and it 18 thought
that the parish has been singularly for~
tunate in securing the services of such
a man.

already laid. .. A design of striking and
impressive church-architecture has
been furnished by M1. Harrison, the
. well- known architect of the Cathedral
of the Incarnation at Garden City.
Long Island. It owes its existence,
very largely to the liberality of a lady
who has IOng been a devoted member
of St. Paul and who with her husband,
is numbered among
benefactors.

- A Limb Breaking Crash.
MILWAUKEE, J 111122 12. — The summer
garden attached to Henry J. W ehr’s sa-
loon at Grand avenue bridge, having a
frontage along the river of seventy-five
feet and being about eigth feet above
the dock. went down with a crash. Lucki-
ly there were only a dooen people sitting .
around at the time; Dr.’ Theo Ki'plinghad
a leg and arm broken. Three others, un-
known, had their arms broken. The Hook
and Laddercompany had to 15112-ch tcf
remove the debris before the- unfortunates'
could be released.
