Two sermOns delivered on Sunday
Week, the one on the “Bible” and the
other on the necessity of a “new church”
have solicited much talk and comment,
pro and con, by church members. We
trust all may be settled amicably.
Hat dealers and their workmen are
discussing the contemplated change in
the tariff, many fearing that should the
law not go into effect until three months,
after its passage, it will have a bad effect
upon that Season’s trade.
Mrs. E. S. Hall, who has been visiting
friends in this city, has returned to her
home in Orange, N. J.
“Jumbo,” a valuable and docile dog
belonging to ('ouucrlman Isaac Jennings,
was badly wounded, probably by a pistol
ball, on Sunday.
A very large number will be deprived
of the privileges so long enjoyed at the
Old Well Cigar’s sitting and smoking
room, when they remove to their new
building on Washington street.

BEDDING.
Last Week Monday there was the first
harvesting of ice in this town. Mr. J. B.
Sanford was engaged all day in this busi-
ness on Mr. A. Treadwell’s pond. The
ice was from five to six inches in thick-
ness, but was of poor quality. About two.
thirds of the thickness contained much
snow and was very porous. -
Wednesday was very warm. The ther-
mometerrosc in the shade to 70 ° .
Last Saturday there was another fall of
snow. which covered the ground. _
Last week Tuesday the Quinnipiac
Fertilizer 00., byDeputy Sherifi Driscoll,
of Westport. attached the oxen, cows,
horse, farming utensils, and hay of Mr. J.
B. Beers for debt. Mr. Beers had been an
agent of the company for the sale of its
fertilizers, and had not paid all his bills-
The matter has since been satisfactorily
arranged.
Last week the traveling was very bad
by reason of the mud,

Mr. E S. Bedford filled his ice house,
Monday from the Couch pond, the frozen
article being four and one—half inches
thick.
Judge Sherwood and E. Beers went to
Black Rock, Monday, to see the lecture
room of the Congregational church of
that place, they being the committee ap-
pointed by the society to make arrange-
ments and see about the cost of a new
chapel.
The young people met with Miss Harriet
Taylor, Monday evening, and organized a
Yong People’s Society of Christian En-
deavor. ‘
Several new cottages are being erected
on the Phipps property, and accommoda-
tions for a large number of city people are
being prepared for the coming summer.
C. G. Sherwood has the contract for
building the masonry.
M. M. Crossman, our respected station
agent and postmaster, is spending a few
days with relatives in New York state.
His brother, Edson Crossman, is taking
his place.
The Helping Hand held a social enter-
tainment at the residence of Mrs. E. J.
Taylor, on Tuesday evening. The soci-
ety consists of young ladies and is of a
missionary character. .
On Sunday Rev. Henry Davies preached
two able sermons from the following
texts : Morning, 1 Cor. xiii, 13; and
Matthew xviii, 21 and 23. Sunday school
was held from 1 to 2 o’clock; Prayer
meeting was held in the evening at the
house of Austin Jennings, it being the
first prayer meeting held under the
auspices of the Y. P. S. C. E. s. A. w.
