of from fifty—five to sixty miles an hour,

that power can be thus transmitted or
conveyed through distances of six and
seven miles and upward. This arrange-
ment, however, was made before the
economical advantage was demon-
strated of dividing wire rope illto
A; novel mechanism has been con-
trivcd for operating the grip by which a
car is connected with a traveling rope
or cable. It consists in a peculiar con-
struction, arrangement and combina-
tion of devices for this purpose, more
effective, it is claimed, than any other
yet brought forward, in accomplishing
the desired action. In the ordinary
construction of those grips, the plan
has been to place them between the
front and rear wheels of the car. with
the operating lever projecting up near-
lyinthe centre. In this new device,
the grip mechanism is supported in
front of the forward axle, and the oper-
ating lever is at the extreme front of
the cal-upon the platform, there being a _
jointed connecting fixture,v.which pro.
vents the movements of the car body
upon its springs from being communi-
cated to the grip arrangement or lever.
It is stated of the new metal gallium,
that, with the exception of mercury,
which only becomes solid 37.9 degrees
Fah, there is no other element which
liqueiics at so low a temperature. It
melts at 81.1 (legrees Fain, so that .it
liquefies when held in.the hand. The
metal is hard and resistant, oven to a
few degrees below the melting point.
It can bc out, and possesses a. slight
malleability. When fused, it adheres.
easily to glass, on which it forms a
beautiful mirror, whiter than that pro-
duced by mercury. 1t oxidizes but
very superficially when heated to red-
ncss in the air, and does not become
volatile. Unlike lead, it acquires only
a very slight tarnish on exposure to
under-43, that of aluminum being 2.6,
that of zinc 7.1, and that of lead, 11.4.
Unlike lead, again, gallium is a highly
crystalliuemctal, its form'beiug that ‘of
.a square octahedron. In" its chemical
ollalPaetcl-istics, the rare element gallium
shows the greatest analdgy to the abun-
dant clement aluminum.
All apparatus for the analysis of im-
purities in the atmosphere has been
introduced into some-of the public in-
stitutions of Scotland and elsewhere.
In this machine aspiration of the air is

which the working handle can be at-
tached. The air pumps are connected
directly with a reservoir 01' about the
capacity of eight cubic feet, and this
reservoir again connnunicates with the

gives rise on the one hand to a some-
what intermittent flow of air out of the
reservoir through the pumps into the
dime pllcrc, and, on the other hand, to
aregular flow of air out of the atmos-

voir is therefore simply to secure a
steady flow of air in the direction of the

thus set in motion in several distinct
streams toward the pumps, is, before it
reaches llle reservoir, first freed from
illlpuritivnby washing, then measured
as it passes through dry gas meters.

The fact that some samples of leath-
er have been found in the market
showing as much as thirty to forty per
cent. of extra weight produced by
glucose additions, has led to the adop-
tion of various tests for ascertaining the
presence of such admixture in that ma~
torial. Most of these require a number
of more or less expensive arrangements,
but a simple and effective means con-
sists of a smallhtest tube and two small
bottles, one containing cupric sulphate
and the other Caustic potash. In test-
ing, a. small scrap of the leather is
soakedin pure water. To the liquid—
enough to fill about one-quatcr of the
test tube—are added a few drops of the
solution of cupric sulphate and half as =
much of the caustic potash solution as
the liquid contained in the test tube.»-
This is shaken well and boiled over a
flame, andif glucose is present a yel-
\ low or red precipitate is formed in the"
tube. Cupric sulphate, or blue vitriol,
readily dissolves in water, and enough
of it must be added to the sample to
produce a. faint blue coloring. ”The
caustic potash solution is made 'by Lil’s-
