THE BUCOANEERS.
The bold English adventurers who
first sailed the Pacific were actuated by
patriotism, and by a detestation of the
Pope, the priests, and the Spaniards.
almost as much as by cupidity. But the
profession they originated proved so at-
tractive to their seafaring countrymen
that after passing through sundry
doubtful stages it was degraded into the
buccaneering that bordered on piracy.
Buccaneering, strictly speaking, was
merely the romance of the butcher’s
business. Thebuccaneer hunted down
the herds of wild cattle that had multi-
plied and ran wild on many of the West
Indian islands, and, establishing his
headquarters on Tortuga, he smoked
the flesh and sold the superannu-
dance. But those amphibious vikings,
being far removed from law, were by no
means fastidious as to how they made
their money. They chased the Spaniards
had the better of them, no mercy Was
shown. They ravaged the Spanish colo-
nies, they stormed and sacked fortified
cities, and when regular business was
slack, or the Spaniards unusually for-
midable, they yielded easily to irresista-
ble temptation, and prayed upon peace-
ful and neutral traders. So that now
and then, if an Englishman came into
the clutches of one of his Majesty’s
cruisers he might be hung up in chains
at Port Royal or elsewhere. But when
any day he might be brought face to
face with death, in shape of shot, fever,
or famine, the particular form was more
Lv matter of detail. If he died game
he had the regard of his com-
rades, who formed the circle in which
his posthumous character was to be dis-
cussed; while on the other hand, in
buccaneering, as on the Stock Exchange
or elsewhere, success was sure to cover a
multitude of sins. A rich man could
sue out his letters of pardon, and even
take high office under a tolerant Govern-
ment, grateful to him for adding to the
national wealth and recruiting seamen
who might serve in the navy. He might
have his snug tombstone in the parish
church, with a tablet in the chancel com-
memorating his virtues and parochial
bequests. Did not Morgan, after being
he terror of the tropical seas, hang or
pardon his former comrades in his ca-
pacity as Deputy-Governor of Jamaica,
and ultimately die in the odor of res-
pectability, a knight of considerable
landed property?

THE noon.
There is, perhaps, no greater wonder
than a book. By the help of little fig-
ures or marks placed upon reeds or skins
some other available material men have
been able to transmit their thoughts
through thousands of years. The names
and shapes of things the deeds and
sorrows that have occurred as far back
as the time of Adam have been made
known to us. Even those abstract and
invisable thoughts which have no shape
or subtance, but which nevertheless in-
spired the writer and have since inspired
others, are all put down in little letters
or figures and made eternal. The songs
of David; the sublime grieving of Job;
the speculations of Plato; the visions of ’
Homer, have by these means been
handed down faithfully for many centur-
ies and distributed among mankind. If
there were no books our knowledge
would be almost confined to the limit of
sight and hearing. All that we could
not see or hear, in action, would be to
us—like the inhabitants (if there be any)
of the Planet of the Saturn—a mere
matter of idle conjecture. To read,
mark, learn, and inwardly digest all the
thoughts and learning of others is evi-
dently impossible. It is beyond the
compass of any intellect. But we may
gather a portion of this knowledge, and
the object to know how to begin this
humbler task and how to proceed for
the purpose. We must not read to waste.
We must—be moderate if we wish to
gain much. The bee does not overload
himself with the nectar of flowers, but
takes what he can carry away. We must
select also, and see that the quality of
what we take be good. We should read,
not merely that we make money, not to
sharpen our intellect, but to enlarge it.
We should read in order to know and
feel what is good and what is evil, and
to do what is good and useful. Are we
ambitious ? let us learn humility. Are
we avaricious? let us learn content.
Whenaman can truly say to himself,
“My mind to me a kingdom is," a king-
dom of which he is the absolute ruler,
there is_no King beyond him.

We are aware that formerly the ex-
planation of how flies walk on glass was
that the flies’ feet were held in place by
the pressure of the air, like the leather
“sucker" used by boys for lifting
stones, and which can be illustrated by
pressing the hand firmly down upon a
smooth, hard surface, and attempting to
lift it suddenly; a slight vacuum will be
formed under the hollow of the palm,
and the resistance due to the pressure of
the atmosphere will be quite sensibly
felt. If a window be dusted over with
flour, or even breathed upon, a fly will
be unable to cling to it, but will fall oil
as soon as it reaches the dusty or
moistened spot. This would seem'to
show that the second theory was the
correct one; but Dr. J. E. Rombout-s
has recently put forward a new theory,
which explanis this action of the .fly’s
foot on the principle of capillary at.
traction. When examined under a
powerful microscope, the fly’s feet were
observed to be covered with club-shaped
hairs. He also observed that from the
tip of each hair a drop of fatty liquid
was exuded, which left a mark on the
glass where the fly had walked, and he
concluded that the insect was enabled to
adhere to the glass by means of the
capillary attraction between the liquid
and the hair from which it was exuded.
As there are from 800 to 1,000 of these
hairs on each foot, the combined at.
traction is more than enough to bear the
weight of a fly.

vnxvs’s FLY TRAP.
This curious marsh-plant, instead of
setting hocussed bowls of liquid for. its
victims, alike to Florentine of the four-
teenth century, lays a regular gin or
snare for them, on the same plan as a
common snapping rat trap. The end of
the leaf is divided into two folding
halves by the midrib, and on each half
are three or five highly sensitive hairs.
The moment one of these hairs is touch-
ed by a fly the two halves come together
inclosing the luckless insect between
them. As if on purpose to complete the
resemblance to a rat trap, too, the edges
of the leaf are formed of prickly jagged
teeth, which fit in. befieen one another
when the gin shuts, and so effectually
cut off the insects retreat. The plant
then sucks up the juices of the fly, and
as soon as it has fully digested them the
leaf opens automatically once more and
resets the trap for another victim. It is
an interesting fact that this remarkable
insectivore appears to be still a new and
struggling species, or else an old type
on the very point of extinction, for it is
only found in a few bogs over a very
small area in the neighborhood of W11.

To run PUBLIC: I have been a fearful sufferer
for fifteen yarn, most of the time with what has
been called Eczema or Salt Rheum, Psoriasis and
Lepra, and lhellke, and have always been told that
there was no cure for me, and have been so Ills-
cournged that! had as soon die as live. I have
been so badly afflicted sometimes that there was
not the small spot from the crown of my head to
the soles of my feetlhat was not diseased and as
red as crimson. 11: would com mouse in small

were not deep, but if I attempted to heal them, or
soon after their first appearance, they would burn
and run together until there was II complete dry,
red cale, which would become so inflamed as to
crack and look fiery a nu angry, and the burning

I was at times so lame that I could scarcely et
about, and could not dress mysc;f without ass at-
ance. I have talcd many remedies, and have paid
$1001n a single instance to a physician, but- have
ever obtained only temporary relief. Although
helped for a time, I soon relapsed again to be as
badly troubled as ever, and during the winter of
1881 and 1832 i suffered so much as to be entirely
discouraged. Last J unc, however, I was advised
by Elder and Mrs. L. C. McKinstry, who are well
known in those ac'llons, to try your Cuiicura Rem-
edies; and I felt somehow a little courage, from
their favorable opinion of them, to tr their virtue.
About the second week of Jilly last commenced
faking the remedies, and within six weeks I began
to see a permanent improvement, until now (Oct 1)
