Although nearly every one knows of Godey's Lady’s Book
(published at 1006 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia), it is not gen-
erally known that it is the oldest monthly publication in America.
Established in 1830, it has outlived all othep magazines, and
might with propriety be called. the mother of magazines in this

stamps, before the introduction of steam, printing, steam rail—
ways, steamships in this country, or steamboats to any extent;
before the invention of steel pens, telegraphy, telephones, sewing
machines, electric lights, and a hundred and one other promi-
nent inventions of the age, greyhaired men and women re-
member it as an entertainer when their hearts were young, and
young people associate it with their first introduction to stories
of romance. ‘And the rising generation find it as pure and
interesting as did its parents, aye, as_ its grandparents did in the
' days of V "Auld Lang Syne." It is an old and well-remembered
landmark in"3ur American literature, and we doubt not that

efforts made by the publishers of the numerous "penny dread-
fuls," it finds such a large patronage, not only in Aurelica, but
all over the world. Although its low subscription price ($2.00 a
year) may somewhat influence its large circulation,-we are in-
clined to ascribe its popularity to intrinsic merit, and we most
cordially bid the old book godspeed on its second half-century,
trusting that we may be permitted to congratulate it on its (:en-
tennial anniversary. _
