of the water supplied by the various
water companies to London. does not in
any case exceed 540 gallons, per square
yard of filter bed in 24 hours.
In a paper by Profs. Ayrtou and
Perry, read lately before the Physical
Society, London, there is' a. prediction
that before long gas engines will be em-
ployed in the propulsion of vesilels.
Soap bubbles which will last a very
long time for laboratory experiments are
generally made of this solution: ' Dis-
solve one gramme of dry Marseilles soap
in 100 grammes of warm water; filter,
and to every 100 cubic centimetres of the
liquid add 40 grammes of white. sugar.
To produce a pure black upon wood
the following receiptis given: Pour
four quarts of boiling water over .one
ounce of powdered extract of logwood,
and when the solution isefl'ected add one
drum of yellow chromate of potassium,
and stir the whole well. Repeat the'ap-

The transition resistance supposed by
Poggendorfi' to exist in electrolytic cells
between the surface of the electrode and
that of the electrolyte in contact with it
has lately been investigated with great
care by Prof. J. Gordon Macgregor in
solutions of very pure..zinc. .The con
clusion arrived at was that such a transi-
tion resistance, if it exists at all, is less
than 0.0125 of an ohm.
A contemporary believes that the lar-

C. E. Bessey calls attention in the
ball. This particular fungus, found by
Prof. R. E. Call in Herkimer County,
N. Y., belonged to the species known as
Lyarperdom giganleum. Photographs of
it were taken. It was irregularly oval in

cotics as chloral and bromide of potas-
sium as a remedy for sleeplessness, as
mischievous and wholly indefensible.

ter, gave an addresson the discharge of
electricity through gases before a meet

handkerchiefs for drying wounds.
Sponges are so seldom and with such
difficulty perfectly cleansed after being
once used that: they are never employed
in the hospital- . Ordinary cotton or linen
towels are. much“ preferable to sponges,
which, if dirty..._are liable to.’ troduce
~ jeeptic material into thewounds. The
paper towels, however. anewer the same
purpose as cotton ones, and are so cheap
that they can be throwuaway after being
used. The cost of washih‘g a large num-
ber of ordinary towels is thus avoided.
The paper towels aresscarbely suitable
for drying hands, after washing, unless
several towels are used at once. because:
a large amount of ”moisture on the handsl
,soon saturates a single towel. For re-'
moving bleed from wounds, a paper
towel is crumpled up into a-sort of ball.
