Townsend Bur~ ‘dcn at 5 East Twonty-sixth street, from which some unknown thief or thieves stole jewels valued at about $60,000 on ~ Friday night while Mr. and Mrs. Burden were at the opera, progresses the mystery surrounding the robbery seems to deepen, and the police were no nearer a solution of it today. The detectives have plenty of theories, but no claws. They are fol- lowing out every incident that seems to have any bearing upon the case, and from the few facts obtained they are trying to draw conclusions that may lead to some- thing definite. The detectives on the case thought at first that they had a possible olcw to the robbers in the story told by Leopold Rogge of his difference with a person known to him as Count Lucien d’Arnan de Riviere. The two wore passengers together on the Red Star steamship li‘riesland from Ant- werp on Dec. 17. They shared the same stateroom during the voyage, and tho countsuccocded in borrowing considera- ble money from Roggo and other passen- gers before the vessel reached port. What first attracted Rogge’s attention to the man was the great amount of jaw- elry he had in his trunk. It consisted chiefly of diamonds and watches. Rogge settled most of the cour’it’s champagne bills on the ship. When the vessel arrived here, the count wont to the Hotel Brunswick. He regis- tered as E. Calmont, Montreal. He occu- pied rcom 229, in the rear of the hotel. overlooking the Burden yard. The exten- sion of the house was a story and a half below his window. The detectives, however, after investi- gating Calmont, or Count do Biviere, as he chooses to call himself, are certain that he knows nothing about the robbery. Brown, who accuses one of his flock of axtorting hush money from him in San Francisco, was pastor of the _First Congre- gational church here for five‘ycars, begin- ning in 1880. The thief might have come through the Stevenson stables in East Twenty-seventh street, at the rear of the house, and scaled the fence. ' Once in the Burden yard there would be little trouble in getting into the house. The detectives argue that the thief must have known the habits of the entire Bur- denfamily. He must have been aware that Friday was the night upon which . Mr. and Mrs. Burden attend the opera; that the costly gems which Mrs. Burden was known to possess had been returned from Tiffany’s, where they were sent to be repaired and cleaned, and that Mrs. Burden would wear only a. portion of her diamonds on that'night. ’ The thief, cocording to the detectives, must- also have known where the small safe was located in which the gems were kept, as well as‘ the location of Mr. Bur- den’s safe, from which were stolen trin- kets and money. These are the facts which support the theory that there was an accomplice of the thief inside the house or at least some per- household. Mr. Borden’s coachmau and footman were not in the house when the robbery occurred. Four of the other seven serv- ants lmd a night 011', but they were all in by 10:30 o’clock and had retired.
