A Brakeman Killed.
Charles Wellington, 23. of New Ba-
yes, a brakeman, was found dead near
the end of the bridge crossing the West
river meadows at 1 o’clock this morn-
tag.
The dead man’s head was badly cut,
his skull was fractured, his check was
cut open, and his right foot was cut off
atthe ankle.

his death—whether he struck an over-
head bridge or stumbled and fell from
a car.
The place wherethe body was found
is a. considerable distance from the last

Erickson Anderson, a Swede, was kill-
ed by the Owl train from Boston at 3:30
o’clock yesterday morning, west of the
freight house at Brantord. The body
was icund on the track by the section
" hands, and was terribly mutilated.
Anderson was 43 years of age and mar-
ried. He was employed in the mallea-
ble iron works at Branfcrd. He .was
seen in an intoxicated condition near
the railroad track late Sunday night

Etcniord Point.
A Good Appointment.
Attorney E. M. Lockwood was last
evening, in receipt of a parchment
signed by Governor Coffin appointing
him for a term of two years, prosecuting
attorney for 'the Connecticut Humane
Society. Mr. Lockwood has owned and‘
loves animals, and he will ask in all
prosecutions for cruelty the full extent
of the law, and he will insist on such
. punishment being meted out to all of-‘
tenders. Simply stated, the appoint-
meat re fleets credit on Governor Collin.

Secretary Carlisle sent in his report
to-day. He says revenue is not wanted.
He is sure that a careful examination
will disclose many sources of useless
expenditures. Action in this direction,
with: refusal of appropriations is the
remedy for our empty treasury. he
thinks. It will provoke excited dis-
cussion in both Houses.

committeesof the Senate completed its
labors to-night and directed a call for a

diately upon the adjournment of the
Senate. Senator Platt is given the
chairmanship of patents and Hawley,

Senate until after the holdays.

New Stock To Be In It.
Treasurer Squire of the Consolidated
road said yesterday that the new stock
would participate in the divdcnd of two
per cent that was declared by the direct-
ors Saturday. The new stock amounts
to $9,500,000, and the interest thereon
for the quarter ending Dec. 31 will be
$190,000, and this amount additional to
the usual'quarterly dividend, will be
paid out. ' The provisions of the issue
was that all who subscribed'after Oct.
10 should pay interest from Oct. 1, and
iniconsequence they are now entitled to
their share of the dividend just author-
ized. ‘ ' '

Arrests in Bridgeport.
George Downing and Sam. Merritt,
proprietors of the Alhambra Concert
Hall, Bridgeport, were arrested last.
night on a charge of running a disor-
derly house. The arrest is the result of
a crusade against the place by the
Standard. The accused are out under-
$200 bonds.

W. S. Cleveland’s miustrels gave a
fine performance at Hoyt’s Theatre last
evening.
The old negro minstrel was lost sight
of in the entertainment given by the
Japs and Arabs, who gave a show by
themselves. Cleveland’s new idea is a
novel one, and judging by the packed
house last eyentng, wxll prove a winner.-

Meant Business.
Tax collector Addison A. Bette, yes-
terday, by‘virtue of the power vested
in him as tax collector, hired a team
and backed it up to a certain business
places in town, and instructed the pro-
prietor that he would move the goods
out if the amount of a certain tax bill
was not forthcoming. The proprietor
' settled and the collector ordered the
man on the truck to move on.

The lecture given by E. A. Hender-
son and 'W. L. Ferris Saturday, at
Gutherie’s Hall was well attended. Mr.
Ferris had charge of the illustrations
while Mr. Henderson described them
in an able manner. The views of
Around the World on which the lecture
was founded was exceptionally good.
A house party was held at the home
of Charles Prescott Saturday evening.
A large number being present. Games
were played and the guests did not de-
part until a late hour. .
