Young Thieves Arrested In Atlantic City
Wearing Stolen Apparel.
. ATLANTIC CITY, Oct.‘ Sit—Detectives
Edwards and Woodruff of the police force
made what they term on important cap.
turc. On a slight clew they succeeded in
arresting some youths who, they say, for
the past few weeks have been committing
many robberies here. The detectives went
to a house on North Michigan avenue and
arrested Lewis S. Meavbius and James
Nolley, both of New York city. ‘Thero
tvere several hundred dollars’ worth of
plunder in the house. When Meavbins
Was arrested, he had on a suit of clothes
which had been stolen two Weeks before
from Hirsch’s store." Nolley was wearing
a coat that was stolen from Eldridgc’s
store on Thursday night last. Nolley, who
is 15 years of ago, says he will confess ov-
nrything. Meavbins is 20 years old. Both
are in the city lockup awaiting an exam-
ination.
INDIANA FOREST FIRES.
Three Persons Reported to Have Been
Burned to-Death.
CROWN POINT, Ind, Oct. Bil—Serious
forest fires are burning in the southern
part of Porter county and in part of
Jasper county. Near Koutz three lives
are reported lost, and one man, Jonah
Hole, was fatally burned. Already 12,000
acres of land have been burned over, and
the fire is spreading rapidly. People liv-
ing at Baum’s Bridge, four miles from the
flames, are preparing to move. Thousands
of tons of boy were burned, and $160,000
worth of fatted cattle owned by Nelson
Morris of Chicago are in great danger.

Brasie of Brasie’s Corners, St. Lawrence
‘county, committed suicide by hanging in
a barn. He was simple minded, and his

More Assertion [About a Treaty. Followed
by a Russian Denial. "
LONDON, Oct. 29.—Notwithstanding the
statement made by The Graphic today
that an official of high authority says that
Hongkong, telling _of important couces:
sions made by China to Russia, “bears no
resemblance to the actual facts,” the re-'
port seems to be confirmed today from
two sources. C. E. Morrison, who recent-
ly traveled through China, writes that as
far back as last August the Chinese news-
papers Outlined a scheme by whichfiChina
proposed to reward Germany, France and
Russia for their ’ intervention against Ja-
pan. Germany, he says, was to, have con-
cessions of land at the treaty ports of Han-
how and Tien-tsin, France was to be grant-
ed certain privileges in southeastern
China, and Russia. Was to be allowed to
extend her railway system to Port- Arthur.
The second ground for believing that
the report may be correct is found in a
dispatch to The Daily Telegraph from Vi-
enna. published today, giving an outline
of an interview with a Russian states-
man, who practically admits the truth Of
the news telegraphed from Hongkong.
Referring to the Americans, this states-
man, whose name is not given, is quoted
as saying: “The Americans are our
friends in‘ Europe. They are especially
zealous in espousing our cause when we
need no outsiders’ help. But in the far
east they are our. enemies or rivals.”
At the Russian embassy here, however.
the statement is made that there is abso-
lutely no foundation for the announce
ment made by The Times correspondent.
It is asserted by the officials there that no
such treaty has been concluded between
the governments of Russia and China
and that the Russian government is not
animated by any anti-English feeling in
its policy in connection with the far east:
