Milton’s Queer Actions When Informed
That His “’ii‘o "Yeas Missing—Blood

The chances are that if Mrs. Milton Ward,
who has been missing from her 'home
Iince last Monday, is not found within
the next few days the attitude of the
farmers hercabout, which is now by no
means friendly, may become positively
threatening.
And yet up to date there is no reason
to suspect that Milton Ward was con-
cerned in his wife’s disappearance other
than that he seemed too ready to charge
Riley Carl, an outlaw, who lives in the
hills about the Manor, with having lured
her away or forced her to accompany him
at the point of a pistol.
Carl was found by a party of searchers
sleeping in the woods, true to his outlaw
habits, but the missing woman was not
with him, and he stontly asserted that he
knew nothing whatever about her. The
discovery of the outlaw was followed by
the arrest of Milton Ward.
The neighborhood from which Mrs.
Ward disappeared so mysteriously was
visited by hundreds of curious men and
Women today. They learned of one new
phase of the case, which is that Howard
Ward, the 12—year-old son of the missing
woman, is being closely guarded at the
house of his grandfather, because Milton
Ward insists that the person or persons
who abducted his wife will attempt to
gain possession of the boy. Ward, all
though paroled, is practically held to
await further developments.
Bloodand Strychnine.
The facts that blood stains have been
found on the doorstep of the Ward cot-
tage and that the husband has explained
their presence by a story that two dogs
fought near the house a few days ago have
created no end of a stir. The fact that
blood stains have been discovered is re-
garded as highly significant by neighbors
of Ward, as was the finding of-a large
quantity of strychnino in his house when
it was first searched for the missing
woman. —
When neighbors told Ward his wife was
missing, he said he knew nothing about
it. He then went home and soon after-
ward announced that he had been robbed
of $18.50, a razor and a revolver and said
he believed Riley Carl had forced Mrs.
Ward to run away with him. Carl, he
thought, had a band of friends in the bills,
by whom, Ward hinted, his wife was held
a prisoner.
This view of the case gained strength
from the assertion of Bill Hoxey that he
had seen Carl on the morning of Mrs.
Ward’s disappearance and after Ward had
left the house, and that the outlaw said
he would go to the farmhouse and help
“Vincy” (Mrs. Ward) milk the cows.
Ward had apparently no evidence of
weight against Carl unless, as has been
suggested, he knew more about the out-
law's visits to his home than he has made
public so far. He has made several con-
tradictory assertions. To J. W. Hartig he
is reported to have said:
“You'll never find her alive. I know
she’s dead. I was drunk—a good lesson
for me. ” '
Rumors and Theories.
After Riley Carl had been found and
there seemed to be nothing to connect him
with the woman’s absence the woods and
ravines near the farmhouse and about
.Shanley lake were searched in an endeav-
or to find her body. The lake will be
dragged. Ward says nearly all his wife’s
clothing is missing.
There have been vague reports that she
has been seen in neighboring villages, and
until these stories have been traced or her
body has been found little more can be
done by the constables, who, for lack of
some more promising line of action, are
still searching the whods.
Some residents of the Manor believe
Mrs. Ward has simply run away from her
husband to avoid trouble withhim when
he is drinking, Generally, however, the
theory that she has met with foul play has
most adherents.
An Alleged Murderer Captured.
BUFFALO, Oct. Ell—Shard Walker, the
canal boatman wanted by the police for
his supposed complicity in the brutal mur-
der of Captain Phillips and his son at
Tonawanda three weeks ago, was captured
on Main street today.
