Narrow Escape From Flames.
CHICAGO, Oct. 26.—The lives of.60 men,
women and boys were placed in Jeopardy
by a fire which started in the picture frame
establishment of E. B. Clark & Co. For
a time it‘seemed that the escape of those
on the upper floors would be cut off by the
dense smoke which poured up the elevator
shaft and stairway.

"Elmendorf, professor of apologetics in the
Western Theological seminary. while con-

CYDE, 0., Oct. Sit—Half of‘thc eastern
wall of the Elmore Manufacturing com-
pany’s three story bicycle factory collapsed
today. All the floors were filled with
workmen, More than a dozen persons
were badly injured and several buried un-
der the .debris. A young son of George
Holloway, foreman of the factory, was the
first to be dug out. He was badly crushed
but may recover.
Following is alist of theinjured: James
Becker, one of the proprietors, head badly
bruisedland hips injured; Charles Eber.
liardt. right arm and shouldcrbruised and
cut; Clarence Whitley, caught under a
machine, head badly bruised and cut; Ed-
ward King, head out and body badly
bruised, will recover; William Snyder, leg
broken; Roy Lcmmon, head out and
bruised about the body; Archie Holloway,
head badly cut and injured internally;
Frank Cook, badly bruised and‘suffering
internal injuries, will probably die; Wil-
liam Hudson, right leg caught under full-
ing timbers and broken in two places.
The work of removing the debris stil‘ con-
tinues, but it is thought all of the injured
men have been rescued. -
Workm‘en began to dig a trench along
the east wall of the building for a water
main, and it was this which weakened
the wall. As the wall fell outward, all
)hree of the floors partially fell, throwing
those who were on them to the ground.
The portion of the wall which fell is about
90 feet in length and three stories high.
The main offices were on this end of the
building and consequently fewer-workmen
Were there to be caught.
J ABBZ BALFOUE’S TRIAL.
An Immense Amount of Documentary Evi-
dence to Be Presented.
' LONDON, Oct. 26.—The trial of Jabez
Spencer Balfour and the other defendants,
Brock, Wright, Theobald and Dibley, in
the alleged Liberator Building society
frauds, was begun in the queen's bench
division of the high court of justice today,
Justice Sir Cainsford Bruce presiding. It
is expected that the trial will lest three
weeks in view of the enormous amount of
documentary evidence to be introduced
and the length of the indictments.
The charge against the defendants is
generally that of fraud in making false
entries and publishing fal ebalance sheets
in connection with the Liberator and
other {companies Balfour is
charged, separately from the other defen-
dants, with having obtained £20,000 by
false pretenses from the House and Land
Investment trust.
Attorney General Sir Richard E. Web-
ster leads the prosecution and John
O’Connor leads the defense. Balfour ap-
peared to be in excellent health and lis—
tened intentlyto the presentation by Mr.
O’Connor of technical objections in his
behalf. The court room was crowded.
The Execution of Stokes.
BRUSSELS, Oct. Sit—The authorities of
the Kongo State declare that Captain
Lothaire, who is charged with the illegal
execution of the English trader, Stokes,
never had any Americans under his or-
ders, and that the story told by Thomas
Bradley of his having had his American
overseer bound to a tree and slashed with
a swurd, so that he died two days after-
ward, is untrue. ~
Professor A. C. Lyons Killed.
MCKEES'Pou'r, Pa. Oct. 26.-—The Un-
iontown ckprcss strudk and instantly kill-
Saltworks Station, on the Baltimore and
Ohio railroad. Professor Lyons was well
known in musical circles in this part of
[his state. He was 55 years of age and
leaves a widow and four children.
