ports, has among passengers a young cou-
ple who were married at sea on the way
down. The groom is George S. Matzmura,
a Japanese. Matzmura and the lady, who

'THE CUBAN BBBELLION.
Spain’s Press Agent Beports'Mox-e Valor-
ous Deeds of Spain’s Troops.
HAVANA, Sept. 24.—News. has been re-
ceived at military headquarters «here of_ a.
desperate fight at Nefi, near Palma Sola,
province of Santa Clara, between 300 in-
surgents, led by Bermudez. and Fleites
and a detachment of government cavalry
under Captain Ricstra. The vanguard of
the cavalry, consisting of a sergeant and
seven privates, was first surrounded by
the insurgents, and in the engagement
every one of. the vanguard was killed. By
this time Captain Riestra, with the main
body of cavalrymen, 35 in number, came
up and engaged the insurgents, whom he
forced to retreat, leaving three of their
number dead on the field. Their wounded
they carried off with them when they re-
tired.
It is reported that the insurgent chief,
Joaquin Roque, has been wounded in an
engagement with government troops.
It is rumored that General Gomez of the
insurgent army has reached Santa Clara.
As the bulk of the cruiser Barcastegui,
which was sunk by the ‘merchantman
Mortera Wednesday night, constitutes a
menace to vessels leavingor entering the
port of Havana, it has been decided to
break up the hull with dynamite. The
divers have refused to work upon the
wreck on account of the danger from
sharks and because of the insufficiency of
their outfits.
Two daughters of the late Admiral Del-
gado Parejo, who lost his life when the
Barcastegui was sunk. are seriously ill
with diphtheria. His son is down with
the yellow fever. ' -

Foulkes and his sister, R. N. Getchell, oi!
Oakland, whose father, Thomas Foulkes,
died in Denver in 1880, think that they
are wealthy and that in some way they
are being defrauded out of valuable prop-
erty which their father left in Colorado.
At the time ofthe death of Mr. Foulkes
he owned a. lot in the heart of the city of
Leadville. In the early days of his pur—
chase the property was not held at a. very
high figure, and like all mining town
holdings it fluctuated in price as times
were good or bad, but it never got to be
gilt edged, and at the time‘df Mr. Foulkes’
death it was reported to be hardly worth
adnfizzistering, upon. It turns out, how-
ever, according to more recent reports,‘
that the land is of a value for above the
hopes of the most sanguine. It is said to
be worth $400. 000. So satisfied are the
Foulkes children that they are wealthy
and entitled to the Leadville holding that
they have retained attorneys to investi-
gate the matter and recover the property
if possible.
A man named Willard, who acted as ad—
ministrator of the estate, is accused of at-
tempting to (icfz‘aud the heirs by conceal-
ing the true value of the property.
A Lake Schooner Lost.
ST. IGNACE, Mich, Sept. 24.—Tlie
schooner C. H. Johnson of Cleveland
struck a rock near Groscap today and went
to pieces. She was loaded with block
stone. Her crew were all saved. A ter—
rible gale was blowing from the south‘
West.
A Big Lumber Fire.
FOND DU LAC, Wis, Sept. ,24.——While
the wind was blowing 40 miles an hour
fire was discovered in the Moore 8:. Gallo-
way lumber yard north of Fond du
Lac. The mill and about 10,000,000 feet
of lumber was burned. Loss $140,000;
insurance, $73,450.
