NEW YORK, Aug. 1.——More than 1,200
of the striking brotherhood tailors ‘re-
turned to work this morning as arcsult of
the signing of the agreement by nearly
100 contractors.
This early action on the part of so many
employers and the fact that a crowd of con-
tractors who had not signed were in New
Windsor hall eagerly awaiting an opportu-
nity to do so, as soon as the settlement
committee cOuld attend to them, were
looked upon as indications that there
would be a stampede of the bosses, and
the strike would end sooner than expected.
Lawyer Shulum and his corps of clerks
began their work in New Windsor hall,
and a dozen contractors were disposed of
"within an hour.

Her Straightforward Plan For Paying a
Long Overdue Claim.
MADRID,
Carlist senators and deputies have ad-
dressed a protest to the government
against the payment of the Mora claim
without the sanction of the cortes. The
protest declares that the government pre-
cipitancy in settling the claim of the
United States is unconstitutional and hu-
miliating upon Spain, and that the con-
duct of the United States in taking ad-
vantage of the Cuban insurrection to press
this claim is an exhibition of an unfriend-
ly disposition. ,
The government has decided to pay the

“We have presented our demands, and
they are not excessive or unreasonable,"
said a member of the brotherhood’s cx«
ecutive board. “We do not, therefore, see
the necessity of a conference.”
The big mass meeting in Cooper Union
hall was considered by the brotherhood
leaders a grand success in every particular.
The statement that the strike was pre-
cipitated by the action of the Contractors’
association earlier than expected was reit-
erated in a strong resolution, and the or-
der calling the strike was indorsed and
deafening cheers re-echocd the sentiment.
Three hundred girl strikers were conspic-
uous on the platform.
Speeches were made by err-President
Gompers of the American Federation of
Labor, Meyer Schocnfeld and others.
The police are astonished at the orderly
manner in which the strike has thus far
been conducted. Not a single arrest has
been reported as a result of the strike,
notwithstanding the fact that there are
more than 15,000 men and women still
out. The shop committees go about their
work in a quiet way and have all the
shops covered.
The report that 2,000 Knights of Labor
tailors were coming here from Baltimore
and other cities today to take the places of
the strikers was denied by Secretary Wit-
kowsky, as far as the Contractors’ associa-
tion is concerned.

A Third \Vest Superior Bank Closes.
WEST SUPERIOR, Wis, Aug. 1.———The
Keystone National bank closed its doors.
It was considered one of the strongest
banks in the city. The immediate cause
of the trouble was the closing of the Su-
perior bank last Saturday, which caused
arun on the Keystone National.— This
makes threo banks that have closed with-
in the last 60days.
Drowned During a Gale.
OGDENSBURG, N. Y., Aug. 1,—As Rob-
ert Bolton and Young Row were coming
over from Brockville to Terrace park in a
rowboat during a strong gale, the boat
was overturned and Bolton was drowned.
David Stevens of the park went out in a
boat and saved ROW. Bolton was 19 years
