A TRAIN HELD UP.
Robbers Make a Good Haul at a Small
‘ Station In Ohio.
TOLEDO, July 25.———Lake Shore and
Michigan Southern train N0. 37, going
west from here at 11 :10, in charge of
Conductor Darling and Engineer Tier-nan,
- was held up and robbed at Reese. a small
station 38 miles west of here, at 12:40.
The train had pulled into a blind siding
to allow a. special to pass, when it was
' boarded by six masked 'men, who, at the
point of revolvers, compelled the express
messenger to unlock the safe and deliver
the money.
The amount taken from- the car is not
known, but it is estimated by the express
officials here at $8, 000. ,7 Superintendent
Blodgett and Manager Canifl', who wore
in the city at the time,~left at once on a
special train for the scene of the robbery,
notifying the police officials at all adjacent
towns to be on the lookout for the robbers.

As a. usual thing the money carried in this
train does not amount to much, but for
somereason it was heavy on this trip.
The passengers in the coach were not
molested, and immediately after complet-
ing their work the robbers took to the
woods and disappeared. The detective
force from this city started at once for the
scene on a special train, and the country
is being closely watched for suspicious
persons.

While attempting to board a freight

Jay Mallory eame near losing both
legs. The car was being swiftly backed
on a switch when Mallory made an
effort to jump on. He stumbled over a
pile of dirt and was-thrown, but suc—
ceeded in catching the car step and
was dragged over the ties for quite a
distance with both legs dangling on the
rails. He finally succeeded in drawing
himself up and reaching the car plat

at Santiago de Cuba from Manzanillo,
bringing information that two columns
of Spanish troops, under General Navarro
and Colonel Aldavo, commanded jointly
by General Lachambre, comprising 4,000
infantry, 300 cavalry and 3 guns, arrived
at Nucvitas, the port of Pucrto Principe.

and exhaustive of all Encyclopedias, and regard it as now superior to all others in cheapness
and. excellence. The new addition , on American subjects thoroughly supplement this
original edition. Rev. Homer N. Dunning, D, D.
After this letter was written for the Sentinel the value of this edition of Britannica
was questioned by published opinions. The Sentinel then supplied Dr. Dunning with a
complete set of our books. He has spent some time in making a thorough examination of
the set, and we now submit the following letter from him, which is a frank expression of his
opinion at the present time. This should satisfy the most doubtful person, and if anything ~
of a damaging nature should be said in the future of the Sentinel edition of Britannica it
should be locked 'upon with suspicion.
Editor Sentz'nel.'——At your request I have made a fuller and more careful examina-
tion of this edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, and I am confirmed in~my former
impressions of its qualities. I have used the eighth and ninth editions of the original for
thirty years and of its excellence there is no question, and whatever deficiences exist between
this edition and the British edition seem to me to be well supplied by the American addi-
tions, many of which are written by men 0f the first authority in their several departments. I
Will add that a shadow of prejudice against this edition, which had been cast by some crit -
cisms I have read, has been removed by a closer examination. Anyone who acquires this
great work which you are offering to your readers will find it an inexhaustible treasury of
knowledge. . . ‘
