hausted that they could scarcely lift their
boat from the water. '

Some Opinions of the Race.

Several members of the Cornell Glee
club tried to arouse the drooping spirits of
the Cornell crew, saying:

“You have no reason to feel ashamed.
You did your best.” '

Colson, the Cornell coxswain, deserves
credit for the way he kept his head and
encouraged the crew. He kept shouting
to his men while they were tumbling
about:

“Steady, boys; steady. Go ahead. You
have got them.”

The general opinion is that the Cornell
crew were hopelessly overtrained, and that
there was no climate or malaria about it.

Colson, who acted as spokesman for the
Cornell crew, said: ‘

“We had a. hard race, and we were fair—
ly and squarely beaten.”

“Has the crew been overtrained?” Col-
son was askefi

“Mr. Francis’ orders are that there
should be no talk on that subject,” was
the answer. .

Upon reaching their dressing room half
of the Cornell crew laid down on the rough
board floor and panted like hounds after a.
long run. In addition to the regular at-
tendants the members of the Cornell Glee
club who were present acted as rubbers
and assisted in washing down the crew
with cold water. The other Cornell men
outside the dressing room enlivened the
proceedings by giving the college yell again
and again at the full strength of their
lungs.

In the meantime the large boathouse
had become crowded with Americans, and
this had a cheering effect upon the defeat-
ed crew.

In addition a. number of Englishmen be-
longing to Henley called at the Cornell
boothouse' and expressed themselves as
being sorry that the Americans were de-
footed.

After dressing F. W. Frccborn said,
“The Englishmen are the best men.”

New College Beats Eton.

The second day of the Henley regatta
opened with fine weather and was marked
by a. large attendance, many persons being
present who were detained in London yes-
terday. The first heat was between the
New College and Eton sights and was won
by the former by a length and a. half.

Both crows struck the water simultane-
ously at a 42 stroke. Eton led slightly at
first, but at the top of Temple island the
New College boat showed just in front
and maintained this very small load to
the quarter mile mark. From this point
the New College men gradually drew away
from Eton and won by a good length and.
a half in 7 mi utes 18 seconds.

This leaves he contest for the Grand
Challenge cup to be fought out tomorrow
between Oxford and Cambridge as repre-
sented by the New College and Trinity
Hall crews. .

Coach Courtney was still ill in bed to-
day: The anti-American feeling caused
by Cornell going over the course yesterday
after Leander failed to get away when the
word “G0!” was given by the umpire con-
tinued, and offensive remarks were heard
on all sides. _

“They are just like the Australians,”
said one person in the crowded breakfast
room of the Red Line hotel today; “they
don’t care how they win. ”

The Loanders continued to fan the flame
of discontent. They were to be heard in
all parts dbnouncing not the umpire or
the decision of the committee of stewards,
which gave the race to Cornell yesterday,
but they denounced Cornell, in spite of
the fact that the American crew simply
obeyed the instruction of the umpire to
row over the-course. The Loanders made
no overtures to Cornell yesterday to race
again, but they began an immediate tor-
rent of abuse.

Professor Andrew F. White, who has
been identified with the Cornell crew ever
since the latter arrived at Henley, is per-
fectly well known to the different crews.
Yesterday evening he entered a crowded
hotel lobby wearing the Cornell colors.
In the lobby were a. group of Leanders ex-
citedly talking over the unfortunate mis-
understanding of yesterday. Begg, the
Leander coxswain, glanced at Mr. White
and then said, evidently for his benefit:

“D—n the Americans anyway. It is
just what we might have expected.”

Don Quixote Ezeto Nearly Ready.

SAN FRANCISCO, July 11.—Gencral Ezeta
and his followers are said to be nearly
ready for their attack upon Salvador. It
is reported that today he received a. large
sum of money from Central America, and
that in a short time the balance of what
is needed will be supplied. Ezeta is said
to be negotizfting for a sealing or whaling
steamer which will take on atone of the
islands of the Santa Barbara channel arms
and ammunition.

Franco Sanchez In New York.

NEW YORK, July 11,—Several young
Cubans arrived today from Havana. on the
steamship Seguranca. It was reported
that they were compelled to leave their
country by the Spanish authorities.
Franco Sanchez, a Cuban exile and patriot,
was also a. passenger on the Seguranca
from Vera Cruz. Sanchez was compelled to
flee from Havana. to Vera, Cruz on the ar-
rival of General Campos at Cuba.

The Amesbury Strike.

AMESBURY, Mass, July 11.—A number
of operatives from Exeter, N. H., arrived
here today intending to go to work in the
Hamilton mills, but they were met by the
. strikers’ committee and prevailed upon
not to enter the mills. Agents are here
from several New England cities engaging
operatives, and half of the 800 strikers
have already left town.

 

De Lome Goes to Boston.

WASHINGTON, July 11.—Minister Dupuy
de Lome of Spain left Washington today

ily in the resorts near Boston until Octo-
ber. The minister chooses this location so
that there may be ready communication
with Secretary Olney on the pending Cu-
ban trouble. The logation here will be
closed after Saturday.

Tribloet’s Brothers Demand Reparation.

N OGALEs, A. T., July 11.——The brothers
of Robert Tribloet, recently killed by the
Mexican authorities for complicity in the
recent robbery and murder near Prouteras,
in the state of Sonora, assert that he was
in no way concerned in the robbery. They
claim he was an American citizen, and
that it is the duty of the United States to
exact reparation.

Minor Presidential Appointments.

WASHINGTON, July 11.——Tho president
has appointed William H. Anderson of
Kentucky to be register of the land‘ office
at Enid, O. T. ; Charles F. Carpenter to be
chief engineer and Edward Dorrey and
Henry 0. Stuyton to be first assistant en-

Associated Typesetting Engineers was in-
corporated today by the secretary of state.
It is a protective labor association, con-
fined to the state, and all the directors are
Brooklyn people. 1

Big Bank Consolidation.

TACOMA, July 9.—It was announced to-
day that the Pacific National and the
Citizens’ National banks, two of the
strongest banks in Tacoma, will be con-
solidatedas soon as the le a1 requirements
can be complied with. heir combined
capital of $800,000 will be increased to
$600,000. The primary object is to enable
them to do a business on a 19530: scale.

Hendloy Estate Quarrel Settled.

SAN FRANCISCO, July 9.-—When Joshua
Hendley, a pioneer manufacturer of min—
ing machinery, dicd, he left a. $500,000
estate to nephews and nieces. His brother
Samuel Contested the will, and there was
a. long battle. The matter has now been
compromised. Samuel is to take $30,000.

Drowned Himself, as He Threatened.

BRANFORD, Conn, July 11.——Thomas
Hinks, aged 55, a. widower, committed
suicide by drowning. His body was found
in the Branford river. He sent a. letter to
a friend, mulled Monday night, stating
