made by Acting District Attorney McIn-
tyre that he wpuld have the grand jury
make a. careful investigation into the es—
cape of the three desperate criminals, A1-
len. Killoran ,and Russell, from ,Ludlow
Street jail on Thursday last has consider-
ably worried Sheriff Tamsen. Mg. 'McIn-
tyre threatens to secure indictments, and
he is believed to have the sympathy of Re-
corder Gofl‘. Sheriff Tamsen said today
that there were no developments. He
would not say what progress his “clew”
was making, but threw out vague hints of
his being on the track of the burglars.
Shcrifi Tamsen went on to say that the
new warden of Ludlow Street jail will be
selected without any regard to his polit-
ical affiliations. He also said that many
improvements will be made in the admin—
istration of the jail. .
EHe says he will go before the board of
estimate and apportionment at the next
priation so that he might add to the force
of keepers now at the jail.
“As for the story that the postoflfice
burglars were allowed unusual privileges
at tho Wardon’s table,” continued the
sheriff, “that is rank nonsense.
“When I took office, I determined to do
away with the boarders’ table at the jail.
I soon learned that prisoners had a legal
right to buy their meals if they had the
wherewithal. If these meals were not
furnished by the warden, they would have
to be brought in from the outside.
Tamsen Blames the \Vnrden.
“Any one can readily understand how
much easier the escape of prisoners would
have been under such circumstances.
‘ ‘ These men, however, would never have
escaped from the jail had Warden Raube
obeyed my instructions—namely, prohib-
ited them from intermingl’lng- with the

Now that he is'out of the jail, with lit-
tle hope of getting back, he is anxious to
tell all he knows and have himself set
right.,
He expects to be called before the grand
jury as well as the United States grand
jury, which will begin its investigation
next Wednesday. He also proposes to help
out the investigation by providing as
many witnesses as possible.
The story which he now tells shows the
shocking condition of the jail discipline
11p to the time the three notorious crim-
inals escaped.
“No criminal prisoner in the jail,” he
said, “was allowad in the yard for cx~
ercise. They Were confined to the tier
upon which their cells were located. They
were up every morning at 7 :30 o’clock and
had to be in their cells immediately after
supper time.
“With the three men who escaped, how-
ever, it was different. From the very first
day they were put into jail they prac—
tically owned it. They paid $15 for the

were down at 8 o’clock in the morning
and had their bath. Then they lounged
about the reception room or in the yard.
They saw all the visitors they pleased and
generally did as they liked.
“They were not locked up until 9:30 or

received no visitors before their escape.
That is not true. The Monday before
they got away Russell’s father—in-law was
in the jail for three hours and talked with
the three men at the black wall, near the
Essex street side.
“The very day before their departure a
young man, with straw hat and small
sized mustache, was in the jail for a. con-
pleof hours. They could have brought
in all the pistols they wanted.
“Now I want to tell all about What
happened on Thursday morning. Iwas
supposed to get to the jail at 8 o’clock
sharp.
“I got there at 7:55, stopping just at
the newsstand at the corner to buy a. pa-
per. When I entered the jail, I saw Keep-
er Schoen and the engineer, Helthcimer,
sitting in the office talking earnestly.
Back of the rail were the three prisoners,
all fully dressed and ready to step out.
They were not supposed to be down at the
time.
“The moment I entered Heltheimer got
up and said he had to go out to mail a let-
ter.‘ Iwas surprised to see Schrocn, be-
cause he should have been on watch up
stairs. It was Keeper Heartvogel who
should have been on the gate with the
keys, but instead Heartvogel was up
stairs. They had changed positions.
E. “The instant Heltheimer had taken his
departure Schoen jumped up and said he
wanted to go inside for a. moment, and
giving me the keys asked me to hold
them for him. I did so.
“He left the roOm, and on the instant
Allen sprung at ,me, put a pistol to my
head, grabbed the keys and “threatened to
shoot if I made a. noise.
“The other two also covered me with
revolvers.
“The story first given out that the men
Were not down stairs when I entered the
jail is untrue. It was given out by Baabe’s
orders, so that there should be no sus‘
picion.
A Few “Winn."
“I said last Saturday that one of the
girls, a. waitress, was very thick with Al-
len, whom she called Charley, and that
they Were very thick. That is true, in
[pits of all their denials.
“There are a. number of witnesses who
can testify, as I will, about her. The
janitor of the jail, who saw everything,
came to see me today. He will tell u

“Why was I left alone at all on that

Deputy Sherifl‘ Sherman, who is chief-
warden, has already undertaken to reform
the ail, and he has a number of recom-
mcn ations to make to the sheriff as well

has reached Winston that system Senator
R. S. Mitchell of Cresswell county has

from his home. He is said to be heavily
involved and ‘21 charged with misuse of
trust funds. It is said that quite a number
of attachments have been served on his

Blow Up the Bridge.
, PERRY, O. T., July 8.—Several bridges
of the Choctaw railroad were partially
blown up by dynamite a few days ago as
a result of the rivalry between the towns

Canadian river, 87 miles from Shawnee,
and dynamite was put on several trestle‘s
near Shawnee. The end of the bridge was
blown out.
