Bmsron, R. 1., July 8.—The‘Defender‘
put her nose into deep water late Satur-
day afternoon and skimmed out upon the
bay for a trial trip. It had been expected
the yacht would be given her first trial
early in the day, but during the bad
weather of the forcnoon it became rumor-
ed about that the trial was off.
It was late in the afternoon when 20
men were seen coming out of, the Herre- ,
shofis sail loft with a load of canvas
stretched over their shoulders, the huge
mainsail of the Defender, all ready to‘bo
bent on and stretched. From the deck
the sail was sent aloft and bent on the
gulf. This done, the gulf was lowered, the
sail not having been bent on the boom.
Then a tug came and took the Defender
in tow, and down the buy both craft went,
only those who were watching things from
shore being aware that the Defender 'was
really out or a sall.
The Defender returned from her trial
trip after being out two hours, and during
her six mile spin she behaved splendidly.
Messrs. Iselin, Morgan and Vanderbilt
Were on board and were highly pleased at
her performance. She was towod out by
Hattie Palmer, with her sail half way up
the mast, as Captain Hall was of the opin- '~
ion that they could put up the sails to bet-
ter advantage when she was out. The
work of putting the soils in proper posi-
tion took up an hour of the two hours
time, and she only sailed about six miles.
During that time, however, her mainsail,
jib and foresta-y sail were tried, and all on
board wore unanimous in the opinion that
Sailmakcr l-Iathavrsy had done a good
job.
Captain find was seen on his return
and said the yacht was a good, stifi hot
and stands up Well. They‘did not give
her a proper trial in stays on account of
the lack of Wind, but from what little
they had seen she was undoubtedly very
quick. Some changes would have to be
made in her rigging, but what those
changes were he would not say.
A number of the crew were seen, and
they stated that they were anxious about
the boat before she started, but had come
back perfectly satisfied with her during
the short time she had been out.
One thing that was noticeable about the
Defender was her sensitiveness, not in
healing, but in darting ahead in response
to an increase of wind. When her head
soils were broken out first, the boat gave a
veritable bound forward. It would seem
that'she is going to be a stiff boat, for
even when southerly puffs of wind came
strongly, as they did now and then, she
did not heel much.
Summing up the result of the trial, it
may be briefly stated that the Defender
showed apparent ability to carry sail, a
speed under lower soils which was decid-
edly surprising under the circumstances,
and an easy movement through the’water,
which is proof of fine lines and an easily
driven body. She pnomises walk—very
well—and only words of commendation
for her can be heard here.

Englishmen Confident That Dunraven’s
Yacht “’ill Capture the America Cup.
HuNTER’s QUAY, July 8.—Valkyrie’s lat-
est trial against the Britannia and the
Ailsa. is regarded as a fair one. The re-
sult Was thoroughly satisfying to her
owner, Lord Dunraven. There was a
steady breeze, but the wind was not too
strong for the small jibtopsnils, and the
Valkyrie beat the Britannia 18% minutes
on the 30 mile course. 5
An authority upon yachting said to your
representative that Valkyrie would un-
doubtedly prove a very wonderful vessel
The form displayed
places her very far in front of the Vigi-
lant. The run to Skelmorlie was eight
miles, a dead beat to the windward, and
the Valkyrie weathered the mark more
than five minutes ahead of t e Ailsa. and
6% minutes ahead of the B itannia. It
was broad reaching across to Ascog, and
then a clean run, with spinnakcrs set. Up
the Clyde the Valkyrie showed grand
downwind speed, rounding Kilcregan, a
distance of 11 miles, with 9% minutes
lead. It was a close fetch homo, and tho
Valkyrie distinctly outwiuded her oppo-
nents. In the second round the Valkyrie
gave another remarkable display of weath-
erlinoss. '
Lord Dunraven, who was aboard the
Valkyrie, expressed himself as thoroughly
satisfied with the Valkyric’s performance.
The Valkyrie may be fitted for the ocean
voyage at once and slip away for America
as soon as ready. .
As a result of the race the stock of the
Valkyrie has gone up several points, and
there is a feeling among yachting author-
ities that there were good reasons for the
recent poor performances of Lord Dun-
raven’s boat. The charge of jockeying
aside, experts explain that slight altera-
tions of rigging—changes almost imper-
ceptible in the body of the boat—may
have been made secretly by the manage-
ment of the Valkyrie, and in cbnsequence
a career of conquest may be predicted in
the future. The thousands of amateur
and professional yachtsmen who a week
ago could scarcely believe their eyes when
they saw the Prince of Wales’ Britannia, '
apparently at first defeated by the Val-
kyrie, round markboat after markboat in
the lead, winning the Royal Northern
Yacht club event without the slightest
difficulty, are now happy over the victory
of Lord Dunraven’s yacht. Once again
they are confidently predicting that the
Valkyrie will bring back the cup from
America when she returns to this country.
The Siberia. Riot.
LOUISVILLE, July 8.—A special to The
Courier-Journal from Huntsburg, Ind,
says: “The reported riot at Siberia on
the 4th inst. turns out to be merely a. free
for all fight, the result of jealousy between
two young men, cousins, who were pay-
ing attention'to the same young lady, and:
was not brought about by religious dis-
sension, as reported.”
Thurman Will Speak.
COLUMBUS, 0., July 8.—-rSome free silver
men at} Washington Courthouse, having
called a meeting of their forces for next
Wednesday, invited Allen W. Thurman to
address them, and he has consented. The
story that he called this" meeting 01: any
other free silver meeting, he states, is not
true. -

' An Entire Family Asphyxiated.
CHICAGO, July 6.—Slx people, members
of the some family, were aSPhyxlflted by
gas and were found dead in their beds to-
day. The dead are Frederick Hellman, o
bricklayer; Ida Hellman, his wife; Ii‘ritz,

The deaths are supposed to have resulted
from the accidental turning of a gas Jet in

' Schooner Probably a Total Loss.

schooner Abbie and- Eva. Hooper, Captain

land, ncar the life saving station, and will
probably be a. total wreck. The crew of
seven men and a boy were saved. The
