Not Yet Been Recaptured.

Says He Is Brave.
NEW YORK, July 6.—Although a full
description of the three notorious crimi-
nals, J 00 Killoran, Charlie Allen and
Harry Russell. who escaped fromLudlow
Street jail yesterday, has been telegraphed
to the police of almost every city in the
country, and although every ferry landing
and railroad station has been watched by
detectives from within two hours after the
escape, hot the slightest trace has so far
been foundxof them.
They have disappeared as if the earth
had swallowed them up, and there is a.
growing suspicion on the part of the police
that many moons will come and go before
they are again heard from.
The character of the men themselves,
the fact that they must have considerable
money put away somewhere as a result of
many robberies and the further fact that
they have many friends who will leave no
stone unturned to aid them in escaping
load to the above conclusion.
The full two hours which elapsed be-
tween the actual time of their escape and
when the police were put upon their track
was more than enough to give the crimi-
nals a good start.
They could easily have quit the city,
and while officers were searching the base-
ments in the vicinity the men could have
been increasing the distance between them.
As the full facts of the escape become
known the deeper becomes the conviction
that there may have been collusion on the
part of some one employed in the jail or
with some other of the prisoners.
How Did They Get Revolvers?
It is a fact that no visitor of any kind
had been admitted to see any of the three
criminals since last Friday, when the men
were thoroughly searched as well as the
cells which they occupied.
They had no revolvers then, yet yester-
day when they attacked Keeper Schneer
each man had a pistol with which he
threatened to shoot.
The warden is trying, to find out just
how the pistols got into the jail, and Sher-
iff Tamscn is engaged on a like task. To
both ofilcials the result of a. searching in-
vestigation is of all importance. It may be
that one of their heads will fall in conse-
quence.
As to the keepers, they all claim to be
anxious for the fullest investigation. They
realize the trend of public suspicion and
are anxious to have their skirts cleared.
Keeper Schneer, the man who was at-
tacked, and from whom the criminals se-
cured thc keys to the doors, is indignant
at the manner in which he has been treat-
ed in the stories as published. He is par-
ticularly wrathful at the insinuation that
the men had no pistols at all.
“These men never frightened me with a
tin match box or a paper of tobacco, ” he
said. “I am willing to swear that three
pistols were leveled at me by the men, and
that I had to stand still when they ordered
me to do so. ..
“I am just about as brave a man as they
make them, but what could I do against
three of them, each man armed with a pis-
tol and ready to shoot at a sccond’s n0—
tice?”
The Skeptical \Vatden.
“All this is very fine, ” said the warden,
who was listening, “but how did the pis-
tols get into the jail? ~
“N ow, I want to say right here that I
have no reason whatever to suspect that
any one in this prison—any of the keepers,
I moan—had any hand in bringing them
in. It is a conundrum which I am unable
to unravel, but I will get at the bottom of
it.”
There is a disposition on the part of
some of the police, particularly in the Eld-
ridge Street station, to discredit the story
that the men escaped at 8 o’clock in the
morning. They argue that the vicinity of
the jail is crowded at that hour, and that
any kind of commotion must have attract-
ed considerable attention.
In tho same building, on the other side,
is the Essex Market police court, in which
at the time were a dozen policemen. Not
one of them heard the uproar.
As against this, however, is the state-
ment of several eyewitnesses to the escape,
who tell graphic stories of the escape and
the flight of the men over house tops.
In one particular the latter statements
are all wrong. Killoran is credited with
having scaled a dozen fences and climbed
up to the roofs of many houses.
As a matter of fact, a reporter saw an
affidavit made by one witness who said he
followed Killoran to a Delancey street
horse car which the criminal boarded. In
.the horse car were fully a dozen persons.
It is certain that the escape was well
planned, and that a. dozen persons perhaps
were fully aware of it. The criminals had
their friends on the outside, who, by the
cries of “Stop thief!” threw the crowd off
the track, leaving the others a clear field
to get away.
The Collusion Theory.
As to the story of possible collusion,
there are a few points to be cleared away
by the sheriff and the warden of the jail.
First, there is the fact that some time
ago the prisoners, or one of them, offered
a large sum of money to two of the keep-
ers to aid them to escape. The offer was
declined and the facts reported. The pris-
oners then had a. large roll of bills, which
they exhibited. They were searched next
day; but, strangely enough, not as much
as a dollar could be found.
Now, what became of the big roll of
bills?
It is possible that the revolvers could
have been brought into the jail by friends
of some of the other prisoners, who, in
turn, could have slipped them to the dos-
perate men. While the latter were them-
selves denied visitors, there Was no such
restriction regarding the others. .
When asked about his liability to the
government, the sheriff said: ‘
“There is no liability. I am not even
in contempt of the federal com'ts for failing
to produce them in court. You see, in
cases such as this the jail is only used as a.
house of detention in which the prisoners
are held awaiting trial.”
“But are you not responsible. even in
that case?”
“The government,” replied the sheriff,
“should not send men of the character of
the escaped prisoners to such a jail as
Ludlow Street. It is not a proper place for
them. We took every precaution, but we
do not have the proper facilities for guards
ing such men.”
