Detective Gladstone yesterday de-
tected a pair of ladies gloves on the
sidewalk and upon picking them up dis-
covered a five cent piece safely stowed
away in one of the fingers.
The post office opened from 9 to 10 a.
m. for the first time yesterday morning.
Those who visited the office expressed
themselves as being better satisfied
with the new hours than the old.
Daniel Malone was struck in the eye
by the crank handle of a crane at the
Iron Works on Saturday and received a
bad gash. He was removed to the hos
pital by order of Dr. L. M. Allen.
A-party of fishermen headed by Ed.
Smith, visited the reservoir on Satur-
day and drew a net for carp. It is said
that the trip was an unsuccessful one
and that only two carp were Caught.
Joseph Olas. aged 8 years, was taken
before Judge Frost this morning,
charged with assaulting Stephen Sauis-
law, and the case was continued until
next Thursday morning, at the request
of Prosecuting Attorney Taylor.
The steamboat Favorite lost three
blades from her screw on the trip to
New York Saturday. She was placed
on the dry dock on her arrival in New
York, but. the blades were not restored
in time to leave at 2 o’clock and a large
number of her passengers took the
Stamford boat home. The Favorite
reached this city shortly before eight
o’clock.
The steamboat company proposes to
put a stop to the annoyance occasioned
by the breaking of the blades on the
screw of the Favorite by having them
made of heavy cast steel. They are
now constructed 0% cast iron, and when.
the heavy steel blades, which are now
being made, are placed in position, the
frequent dry docking of the boat will
be at an end.

The Men Who Have Been Slated For Ap-
pointment by Governor Hastings.
HARRISBURG, J 11110 24.———G0vernor Hast-
ings will this week approve the superior
court bill and announce the appointment
of the seven. judges, six of whom will be
Republicans. The other will be a Demo-
crat. The bill goes into effect Jul 1 and
provides that the court shall 0 gaunt)
Within 30 days thereafter. The court will
sit annually at Philadelphia, Pittsburg,
urrisburg’, Williainsport and Scl‘anton.
A lively contest is being waged for the
new judgeships. The governor has re-
ccived upward of 50 applications, some of
the candidates being among the most
prominent politicians in the state. Al-
though Governor Hastings has given no
intimation us to who he will appoint, it
may be said with certainty that the ap-
pointecs will be as follows:

Brown, Lancaster; E. N. Willard, Scran-
ton; err-Governor James A. Beaver, Bollo-
Eonte; err-Judge Howard Reeder, Easton;
George B. Orlady, Huntingdon, and Henry

Democrat.
The appointments will likely be made
simultaneous with the formal announce-
ment of the approval of the bill.

A Gang‘CIeverly Arrested In Chicago by
Postal Inspector Stewart. ‘
CHICAGO, J unc EBA—One of the most
successful arrests of green goodsnién ever
made in the west was made yesterday aft-
ernoon at the Hotel Sterling. Four men
were arrested, and $2,000 in fresh, clean
bank notes was taken from them.
The men arrested gave their names as
Patrick Gerin, Robert Evans, Charles
Burgh and Lawrence Guinan, the latter
being arrested on suspicion. Mrs. H. C.
Anson, wife of the prOprictor of the hotel,
and William K. Helsapplo, the bartender,
were arrested, but afterWard released from
custody.
A decoy was laid for the men, and they
invited Inspector Stetvart of the postal
service, whom they supposed to ho a pros-
pective purchaser of the goods, to a con-
ference at the hotel. After bringing his
men to the point of offering the goods
Stewart placed them under arrest. None
of the men would talk except Evans, and
he would say nothing beyond that he was
a freight claim agent for a railroad.

men attached to the American squadron
are delighted with their visit. They have
been most favorably impressed with all
that they have seen. They expect to re-
main here some days enjoying the 1105- ~
pitality of the German and other fleets.
After the banquet last night the Amer-
ican ofliccrs Wei-c all presented to Emperor
William and the Duke of York. The for-
mer was extremely affable. He cordially
shook the hands of the American officers
and had a friendly word for each.
During his conversation With Admiral
Kirkland Emperor William especially rc-
ferrcd 'to the great interest shown in
American naval matters. He mentioned
Captain Alfred T. Maliaii’s book on “Sea
Powers In History.” Oi this work he
spoke in terms highly oulogistic, adding:
“I have told all of my officers to study
Captain Mahan’s book well and to sleep
with it under their pillows.”

zette, referring to the efforts being made
to borrow money for China, says:
“The hitch in the Chinese loan is due to
the fact that before the Russo-Chinese ar-
rangement had been effected a contract
for a loan had been signed with a loading
London bank, which placed £1,000,000 at
the immediate disposal of China, and the
bank was given the option of arranging
the great loan which was to follow.
“Russia. learned of these negotiations
and brought her influence to bear to undo
them. It is doubtful whether she will
succeed, as the contract cannot be set
aside with impunity, and it is the duty of
Great Britain to see that the rights of her
citiz ens are protector .” ’
\‘t’esloyan Students Suspended.
MIDDLETOWN, Conn., June 24. —At
least five students at Wesleyan academy
have been suspended for “skidding” in
the recent examinations. They wore
caught cheating and tried before a. com-
mittee of students and referred to the fac-
ulty for punishment. In one case suspen-
sion of one yearwas imposed, while in the
others six months were given. The stu—
do‘nts are bound to sustain the honor sys-
tem. The names of the students will not
be made public.
