An Exploding Boiler Kills Four P60-

Langley’a Harness Shop Destroyed by the
Force of the Blowup and Sixteen Per-
sons Buried In the Ruins—Tho
Bodies Eorribly Burned.
FALL RIVER, Mass, J une 15.-—The
worst catastrophe that has visited the city
since the Granite mill fire occurred in the
morning at the Langley loom harness
shop on County street. A new boiler of
the Kendall make exploded in the base-
ment of the two story wdoden building,
blowing out the entire end of the building,
knocking the supports from the side and
allowing the upper floor to sottleintoa
mass of ruins, which were soon aflame.
Mayer Greene announced at noon that
four persons had been kill(d and their
bodies taken from the ruins. About 20
persons were in the building when the ex-
plosion occurred. There are a number in-
jured, and several may die.
The Shrieks of the \Vounded.
When the flames communicated with the
ruins,firomcn rushed to the scene and made
heroic efforts to rescue the imprisoned work
people. Shrieks from the girls in the ruins
were mingled with the ngonized cries of
theirfricnds, who had hurried to the scene
when the first news of the catastrophe
spread.
Ambulance calls were sent out hurried-
ly, and every physician who could be reach-
cd was sent at once to the scene. The of-
fices and houses in the vicinity were turn-
ed into temporary hospitals.
At 9 O’clock the badly charred and
scarcely recognizable body of a woman
was hauled from the ruins. The fire had
been quenched, but it was still smolder-
ing, and the work of rescuing could go on
only with difficulty. The greater number
of the employees were women. Machinist
Tripp was among those who escaped. Also
a girl of the name of Jnlbert and her sis-
ter—in—law, who worked side by side on the
third floor. One was unhurt and the oth-
er was slightly bruised.
Iurled Into the Road.
The Jalbort girl says that none of the
girls or men knew what "had happened.
There was a terrible report, followed by
a shock. The root seemed to lift and then
fall, completely demolishing the whole
structure. The Jalbcrt girl and her sis-
ter-in-law wore thrown into the middle of
the road. The former escaped uninjured,
but the latter was badly out about the
face and arms.
At 9:45 o’clock the names of the res-
cued, so far as learned, were given out as
follows: Alice Trembly. Mattie Derosciors,
Miss Jalbert, Lech Horton, Adele Dube,
Ida Lopagc, Henry F. Langley, George
E. Davol, Engineer- Tripp and Foreman
Warren. Mr. Langlo, is in a critical con-
dition and has been removed to his home
for treatment. The shock broke in the
windOWs of the Stafford mill and injured
several of the operatives. "be building
is a total wreck.
Boiler Tender Le Page Escaped Alive.
At 9:20 o'clock the badly charred body
of Ilobert Murray was taken out. The
Star Music hall has been made a morgue, _
where Medical Examiner Dolnn, with
many other physicians, was installed.
The boiler was situated in the northwest
corner of the building and was of 50 horse-
power. The man who ran the boiler es-
caped alive and uninjured. His name is
Le Page. He says the boiler was 4% years
old and was built by the Cunningham
iron works. It was a tubular boiler, but
he could not give the dimensions.
'lle said be filled the boiler about five
minutes before it blew up. There was
about four inches of space in the Water
glass not filled with water. The fire had
been going half an hour. The boiler gave
no warning before it exploded. lie was
at the deer when it went up. The third
body, that of a women, was hauled out of
the ruins at 9:50 o’clock. The body could
not be recognized. '
The Names of the Dead.
The employees of the shop who were
killed were the following named:
Adela Dube, 733 Eastern avenue, aged 20
years; Lelia. Horton, Jonks street, aged 17
years; Adolph E. Bellefuille, 9 Fourth
street. 45 years old; Robert Murray, 3
Weybosset street, aged 21 years.
The seriously injured are: Thomas Bar-
ry, 20 County street, skull fractured and
face and body badly burned; he will un-
doubtedly die; Mattie Duroches, 21 Plain
street, bruises andburns, fatally; William
Russell, 20 County street, badly burned; .
Alice Tremblay, Weybosset street, bruises
and burns; Ida Le Page, 10 Unity street,
bruises.
Of the 20 people in the building four
were burned beyond recognition, and 12
escaped with hardly any injuries to speak
of. The whole eastern section of the city
was shaken as if by an earthquake when
the explosion occurred.
A team drawn up to the front door of
the doomed factory was blown across the
street, and the air was filled with missiles
as the building fell. That any one in or
about escaped alive is almost amlracle.
The horror of the moment did not prevent
numberless willing hands from rendering
assistance. Barber Keely dragged a girl
named Champagne from a. window. Neal]
Phillips pulled two half fainting girls
through a jagged hole in the roof, and
men in gangs Of‘ a hundred attached tac-
kle to sectiOns of the roof and walls of the
shop and dragged the collapsed three story
' apart.
Bodies Terribly Burned.
The body of Lelia. Horton. when taken
from the ruins, presented a horrible sight.
In many places the flesh had been burned
bare to the bones, and but a portion of the
clothing remained. She was identified by
a ring which she wore, hearing her ini-
tials. When her sister identified the body,
she fell fainting to the floor. Robert Mur-
ray’s body was burned almost beyond rec-
ognition, but was identified by particles of
clothing. Murray was the sole support of
his widowed mother, a crippled brother
and a little Sister. It was some time be-
fore the body of Adela Dube was identified
by portions of the blue frock she were and
by her light hair.
Adolph Bellcfullle’s charred body could
not be identified until all the other em-
ployees who were in the building had been
accounted for. One leaves a family of
eight, most of whom are grown sons.

- DALLAS, June 14.—The southwest has
gone wild over the Corbett-Fitzsimmons
match, and there is a great demand for
seats. There is considerable speculation
as to what Governor Culberson will do.
While he was attorney general glove con-
tests were everyday afl’alrs in Galveston,
Houston, Temple, Dallas and other cities
of Texas. The law was identically the
same then as it is now. Inasmuch us At-
torney General Culberson discovered no
infraction of the law governing contests
it is not likely Governor Culbcrson, being
one and the same man, will discover any-
thing wrong now when it is proposed to
have a meeting between Corbett and Fitz-
Simmons.
