their wages raised friom $1.35 to $1.50 a.

The funeral of Mrs. Annie Corcoran
who died Sunday aged 29 years was
held from St. Mary’s church at 9 o’clock

A petition has been presented to the
Stamford city council which calls the
Salvation Army a nuisance, and prays
that it be driven from the town.
The. City Council will hold a public
hearing at. the council rooms on Friday
evening, on the layouts to the new do-
pots submitted by the Tramway and
Street Railway companies.
The engine on the “ berry train”
blew out the cylinder head at Sound
Beach last. night. '1‘ rain 80 pushed the
"disabled engine and train to Stamford
where another engine was secured.
The white tent that has given Walton
.. L. Wilcox’s boy so much pleasure this
summer, was stolen from the yard on
Concord street. last. evening. The thief
left. the poles only taking the canvas.
The Supreme court of errors has ren-
dered a decision in the celebrated oys-
ter case of Cook vs. Raymond, advising
the court of common pleas to find for
defendants. The Supreme court. finds
that. the disputed oyster beds were
state beds and not private grounds.
E. J. Lewis of Stratiord has formed
a company with a capitalization of
$100,000. for the express purpose of
planting and cultivating oysters within
the waters of Long Island Sound. The
company is located in Stratiord. The
capital stock is divided into 4,000 shares
at. the par value of $25 per share. The
stock at. pre sent is owned as follows:
Henry J. Lewis, 3,988 shares; Mary S.
Lewis, 10 shares, and A. H. Lewis and
James Herring 1 share each. Stiles
Judson, Jr., has been selected as the
attorney for the company.

WASHINGTON, J unc 11.-—Mr. Olney is'
now secretary of state. Chief J ustico Ful-
ler, who had come to Washington from
Richmond, administered the oath of oilicc
to the new secretary in the diplomatic
room at; the state department. Mr. Olncy
came alone to the state department at a
quarter past; 10 o’clock, and after afcw
moments’ conversation with Mr. Landls,
private secretary to tho late Secretary
Gresham. he was joined by Assistant Sco-
returios Uhl, Adcc and 'Iiockhill, and re—
colt/ed their congratulations.
After waiting half an hour, Chief J us- 1
files Fuller appeared, accompanied by his
daughter, Mrs. Aubrey. Secretary Lamont
also came over from the war department,
and the party, which had been chatting in
the secretary’s oilice, repaired to the, dip-
lomatic room adjoining, and the oath was
administered to Mr. Olncy. The secretary
then received the bureau chiefs of the state
department and settled down at. once to
the routine of his oflice. '

SAN FRANCISCO, Juno 11.—-Pilgrlms are
constantly returning from the new Aus-
tralian colony in Paraguay. They say
that an attempt was made to start; a model
settlement, founded upon the teachings ol
Bellamy, but instead the whole settlement
was run by the devil. The sufferings of
the colony are terriblo. ‘

SANTIAGO, Cuba, June Ila—Tho mill-
. tary governor of Santiago has issued an
order prohibiting the people of this city or
of the towns and villages in the province ,
from leaving for the open country between
sunset. and sunrise. Any person disregard-
ing this Orderwlll be shot. by the troops.
This order is due to the boldness arid op-
paron't strength. of- the insurgents, who
have rcp’hlscd Spanish troops sent to' drive
them away and have carried off hooves
under the very rifles of the government
forces. They seem to be very strong and
well organized in many plagos lights re-
gion, and some hot; headed pan' dues are

new battery of pneumatic dynamite guns
located at. Fort? Winfield Scott, on the
Presidio reservation, intendedfor the pro-
tection of San Francisco, willbc turned
over to the war department. Thqbattcry
is even now practically complete, but lacks
an adequate water supply. To operate the
planijs‘ a poworful, steam pumping equip-
ment. is nc'ccssnry to compress the air
which throws the. projectiles laden with
half a ton‘of dynamite, and of course the
steam plant requires mwatcr supply for
the boilers. When gOod progress had been
made in putting ‘up the battery and ma"
chincry, the cont'itors found to their dis-
may that. not; a drop of fresh watcr was t
be found on the site. -
The battery is composcd'of three 15 inch
guns, one more than the battery installed
at; Sandy Hook for the defense of New
York harbor, and it. is so placed as to give
it; complete sweep \of the main channel
leading to San Francisco. At present;
there are but tWO of these batteries in the
United Stands, and while it. was contem-
plated to install another in Boston harbor
this project may have to be abandoned.
The difficulty lies not in lack of money.
but. in a. serious objection that; has been
made by engineer o‘fiicc‘rs that. the dyna-
nmltc guns would in such shallow places as
Boston honbor endanger the whole of the
costly and olaboi'atc system of submarine
defenses planned for the protection of the
harbor. .
The effect: of a. miss in a’shct, it is said,
would be to explode all of the mines in the
vicinity of the place whore the projectile
strikes. ,This Would open the very chair
nols that. the guns are designed to aid the
mines in keeping closed against a hostile
flcot. Fortunately the objection does not
lie against such harbors as that; at; San
Francisco, for there the water is so deep
that submarine mines cannot be effective-
ly used, but it undoubtedly does apply to
many of our harbors. ‘
To Break the Murder Trial :Rocord.
NEW YORK, June 11.-——Bcginning next
Thursday Assistant; District Attorney
John F. McIntyre has agreed to try 19
murder cases in 28 days, beginning next
Thursday and ending July 19. The first
case to be tried will be that of William
Caesar, who, according to his alleged cona
fession, on April 9 last murdered Mary
Martin.
