The Hon. Levi Parsons Morton, govern- or of the Empire State by 156,000 plu- rality, will have the votes of the New York state delegation 1n the national Republic- an convention next your if he wants them. The Hon. Thomas Henry Carter, chairman of the Republican national committee, was at tho Hoffman House along with the Hon. William J. Campbell, the Illinois member of the committee, and the Hon. Slim Fessenden, the Connecticut member, now speaker of the legislature at Hart- ford. All agreed that the national con- vention should be held in May next year, earlier than usual, and naturally Mr. Car- ter and Mr. Campbell favored Chicago as the place. Mr. Carter-later on had a talk with General Harrison and will go to Washlpgton. Governor Morton by no word to any of his Republican friends has ever intimated that he has the slightest ambition concern- ing the nomination of his party fer presi- dent. He has been engaged in his duties as governor of the state. and notwith- standing the attitude of Mayor Strong and the factionists who surround the mayor Governor Morton, in the estimation ‘Of his friends, has demonstrated that his Republicanism goes far beyond peanut ac- tions. By the governor’s forbearance and his regard for the future of his party in the state he has, in the differences of the last few months, overcome largely the evi- dont determination of Mayor Strong and his friends to make things unpleasant. The Union League Opposition. worked against Mr. Morton at Saratogh last September. They took this course because Mr. Platt was the swiftest Repub- lican in the state to discover the racing quality of Morton as a Republican candl- date for governor. Governor Morton, his party leaders say, has demonstrated since his election that he is the representative of his whole party and has not failed to rec- ognize as governor the just and righteous claims of even his adversaries, factions] and otherwise. The authoritative announcement was made to The Sun reporter that Governor Morton will be the choice of his party in the state before the Republican national convention next year, and, moreover, the Republicans of the state will have no sec- ond choice. The vast majority of the New York delegates will be for Morton, if he is a candidate, first, last and all the time. Another interesting bit of news came out, and that was that certain eminent Republicans in the south have written up to New York Republicans declaring them- selves to be for Morton and wishing to be put in communication with Merton’s friends. The governor is not aware of this new chapter in the situation, but it is nevertheless true. All sorts of rubbish was put into circu- lation concerning the incident of the gov- ernor’s momentary folntnoss on the grand stand at Madison square. Stories of the governor’s ill health are likely to be spread from now on. It will remain the fact that the governor is halo and henrty,‘and his friends said that nobody but the governor himself can stop the New York state dolo- gation from waving the Morton gonfnlon in the next national Republican conven- tion, the friends of Harrison and McKin- ley hermbout notwithstanding.
