The Wednesday eveningr prayer meet-
ing at the Coneregational church will

One of the large elm trees in front Of
John McMahon’s residence on West
avenue, was felled yesterday, owing to
ravage of the elm tree beetle.

Forty-two members of the Norwalk
Union, Y. RS. 0. E., from this city at-
tended the annual meetingr of the Ror-
ficld church, Weston, last evening.

A. M. Lane, of Newton Heights,
killed a two-year-old Plymouth Rock
chicken, on Saturday last, that weighed
eleven and one-half pounds. It should
have been kept for campaign purposes,
. The Tramway company will have out
all of their trailers to-morrow and make
every effort to handle the large c:owds
that will visit Gregory’s and Roton
Point, the Knob and the new Yacht
club house. .

The entertainment given last evening
in the hall of the Franklin street school
for the purpose of raisingr funds to pay
the expenses of the physical instruction
in the school, was a decided success
and a good sum was realized.

Brakeman Charles G. Knapp of the

Housatonic division was killed at New
Milford yesterday. The train broke in
two and the second section ran into the
other. Knapp was on the rear platform
of the first, and his head was fatally
jammed. The dead man belonged in
Bridgeport and leaves a Widow but no
children. His age was 30 years.
The committee appointed by Mayor
Lee to look alter the city’s interest in
the trolley fight, met last evening and
after a discussion of the situation wait-
ed upon Senator John H: Ferris and
suggested that he have an amendment
made to the Senate resolution striking
out that part allowing the Street Rril-
way company to pass under the Wash—
ington street bridge. Mr. Ferris promv
ised to do as the committee requested,
which will no doubt end the fight and
the Citizens of this city can again
breathe free.

Carlton Ccrnweii, foreman of the Gazette
Middletowu, K. J., believes that Chamber-

started a brush fire that spread rapidly.
One man was nearly burned to death in
Baker’s logging camp, and the Munistcg

rollways are in flames, and at the latest
advices they were raging beyond control.

 

Hypnotlsm and Crime.

DETROIT, May SEQ—William Brusscau,
the self confessed murderer of Dr. Pope,
finished his testimony today in the trial
of Mrs. Pope, also charged with her Iius-
band‘s murder. Under severe cross exam-
ination Brusscau admitted having at first
held various stories of the crime, but calm-
ly insisted that the truth was that he inur-
dercd the doctor while under Mrs. Pope’s
hypnotic influence.

Commander Endicott and Mr. Noble, the
commission appointed by President Clove-
land, by authority of congress, to inspect
the Nicaragua canal. route, and the party

canal route to continue their investiga‘

Murdered by Mexicans.

JAUiucz, Mexico, May 20.——The police
found the dead body of an American lying
behind the old cathedral. The body had
been literally cut to bits with a long, keen
blade which cut through cloth and flesh.
Parties recognized the body as that of a
man seen in a saloon Sunday night with a
bigroll of tummy, and who said he lived

to the Limb of a. Tree.
BALTIMORE, May 29.—Jacob Henson,

the young negro who was recently tried
and convicted in the Howard‘bounty count
and sentenced to be hanged on June 7, '
was taken from the Elllcott City jail today

and banged to the limb of a tree.

The lynching was the work of 20 deter-

mined men, who thus avenged the murder

of Daniel F. Shea, which was one of the

most brutal crimes ever committed in
Howard county. _
The lyncliers feared that the governor

of Maryland might be‘ induced to interfere
and commute the dead man’s sentence to

life imprisonment.
The grounds for this apprehension came
from the recent repeated visits to the jail

of specialists in mental diseases to inquire .

into Henson’s sanity and the reported in-
tention of Governor Brown himself to go
out there for the same purpose.

The belief has been growing that Hen?

son’s sentence might be commuted and he
be spirited away to the Baltimore peni-
tentiary. The effect of this belief was
found in a placard which was left pinned
to the breast of the lynched negro on
which Was written:

We respect our court and judges. Governor
Brown forced the law abiding citizens to carry
out the Verdict of the jury. WHITE CAPs.

Shortly after midnight. when the city
was wrapped in slumber, masked men he-
gan to assemble by twos and threes and
soon surrounded the jail. The jailer was
then aroused with the statement, “We
have come for Henson.”

Admittance was refused, but the outer
door was quickly battered down with iron
sledgcs. The noise did not arouse the pris-
oncr in his cell, nor was he awakened un-
til the lock on his door gave way under
the blows of the sledge hammer.

As the lynchers rushed in he shrieked
for mercy. It was useless. A rope was
thrown over the negro’s head, and, more
dead than alivo from fright, he was dragged
from the cell.

Warden Lilly was out of town, but his
family bagged the Iynchcrs not to hang
the culprit in the jallyard. He was bound
and gagged, taken to Merrlok’s lane, the
rope was thrown over the limb of a dog-
wood tree, and the tragedy was over.

Mr. Shea was murdered for his money
in his little E‘llicett City store on the night
of Tuesday, Feb. 10. Henson was in his
employ and had been treated with great
kindness. He confessed. and his convic-
tion took place at the March term of court.
He admitted having struck his victim
with a hatchet and hooked the head of Mr.
Shea as he lay in the corner. Twenty-five
distinct gashcs were counted when the
murdered man was prepared for burial.

KANSAS CITY, May 29.—-A special from
Washington says: “Congressman Upde-
gruff of Iowa has information that the
president intends to call anextra session
of congress early in October. Mr. Upda-
graff says he got his pointer from the lead-
ing Democrats who are in close touch
with the administration.
