The upward movement in New York,
New Haven & Hartford securities con—
tinued yesterday. The stock moved
up to 212 and the debentures to 145.
Judge Russell Frost is in Hartford
to-day and Associate J udgc Hubbell
presided over the Town Court this

Those sketches of the Street Railway
extension under the-Washington street
bridge with tracks omitted, came in
very handy for the opposition, at the
city meeting last night.
Work on Banker Benedict's residence,
,on the site formerly occupied by the
Indian Harbor Hotel, will be begun im-
mediately. O. J. Hedden & Co. of New

The whiskey rebellion in Pennsyl-
vania, and the Dorr war in Rhode Is-
land, are likely tobe totally eclipsed

rival tramway companies in this city.
The Indian maiden who has stood all
winter near the entrance of Trowbridge
cigar store, has been taken _
away to the decorators and will soon
reappear decked out in a new summer

Joseph McDonald and John Smith
were arrested yesterday for intoxication
and “Lean” Sherwood for vagrancy.
. The two former were fined $5 and costs
by Judge Hubbell and Sherwood was
sent to to the Town Farm.
Carlton Cornwell, foreman of the Gazette.

Miss Mary Kirby Jennings.
Funeral director David W. Ray-
mond’s new hearse arrived yesterday
and is quartered at Solman’s stable. It
is one of the handsomest hearses ever
seen in this city. It is known as a flat
top hearse and is provided with two
sets of front posts and curtains, one set
being black and the other white. The
curtains can be attached either on the
outside or inside.
Our citizens are now more than ever,
regretting that the east abutment for
the iron bridge over the Washington
street crossing had not been located
from fifty to sixty fest nearer the
drawbridge, or in a‘line from the Quitt-
ner building on North Main street,
across to the Swartz & Corbett building
on Washington street, with iron post
supports beneath, so that the additional
,space thus given could be utilized as a.
wide side-walk and a wider roadway
passage.

Watson Made a. Prophecy.
GLASGOW, May 28,—Watson, the yacht
designer, was interviewad today. He
prophesied, in a sealed envolope,xwhile in
America last year that America’s next cup
defender would be a kcel boat and that
the centcrboard would be discarded. He
regards this as a moral victory for the
British type.
Miss Dodge's Condition Improved.
WASHINGTON, May 28.—Therc was a
marked improvement in the condition of
Miss Abigail Dodge (Gail Hamilton). For
two days she has appeared stronger, and
there have'been occasional rallies from the
unconscious condition in which she has
been so long. The family is very much
encouraged.
' Killed In a Trolley Accident.
Caruso-May 28.—-A south Chicago
electric car with a trailer, running west
of Seventy-ninth street, struck a farm
wagon containing 12 persons. One was
killed outright, and four wore injured
seriously, three of whom will probably die.
The wagon was demolished and the horses
killed.
Armenian Delegates Criticise Reform.
PARIS, May 28. -—~A conference of Ar—
menian delegates has declared that the

Chinese to Aid Formosau' -
LONDON, May 28.—-The Times today
publishes a dispatch from Hongkcng stat-
ing that "money, arms and munitions ‘of
war are being shipped from the Chinese
mainland to Formosa to assist the newly
established republic in resisting the Japa-
nese. The dispatch further states that
there is a strong antidynastio feeling in
southern China.
Douglas Awaiting His Father’s Consent.
SAN FRANCISCO, May 28.-—-Lord Sholto
Douglas said that the engagement between
himself and Miss Addis, the music hall
singer, was a conditional one and had‘been
effected since the return of Miss Addis to
this city from Bakersfield. The only con-
dition is the consent of his father, the
Marquis of Queensberry, and he has writ-
ten for that.

ROME, May 28.—-The election to the
chamber of deputies of the socialists De
Felice Giufirida at Catania and Barbato
. at Milan has caused much excitement.
Giuflrida, it will be remembered, was sen-
tenced last year to eight years’ imprison»
ment in connection with the socialist dis-
turbances in Sicily. .
